Driven both cars on plenty of occasions and I've driven them as they should have been driven
As I worked for both a ford main dealer and a BMW main dealer at the right times it was a kind of perk of the job to take the cars out when you could get away with it and give them a good blast. Not customers cars but sales cars just so everyone understands
Any way they are both excellent cars as weekend cars but if they are going to be left standard then I would go for the m3 everytime but if you will more than likely get bored, and want to modify it or want to go significantly faster, then I would go for the focus as the price of parts for an m3 are 3 times the price and being realistic power for Ł the focus is the best bet

I have both, and the RS is the one thats taken my heart, i like the m3 but its my daily drive, or was until the snow came, but you need to modify the RS to get it going, but the m3 is quick out the box and a lot of fun to drive, and its much easier to drive fast than a turbo car,

no disrespect to any BMW owners here by the comment I'm about to make,
if you dont want to be tarred by the same brush as some of the total idiots who drive M3's, who think everyone should get out of their way, cut you up and think indicators dont exist.......
.......buy the RS Focus and become the owner of a future classic
M3's are common by comparison, in fact BMW's are now common not disrespecting the BMW as a 'driving machine'. its common by being a 'badge' that everyone wants........
where as the MK1 RS Focus is rare......

Mk1 focus I reckon, got more character and is more fun to drive.
M3's are really epic cars, but I just think as a weekend toy the focus is more fun, even if it is driving the wrong wheels!

Saphs are great, people underestimate them compared to the "inonic" 3 door IMHO

I'm hankering over a E36 M3 Evo or a MK1 RS or even considering an ST225 too. If I could afford an E46 though I'd probably not even think about the other two. Depends what you really want at the end of the day. You can still mod an E46 though just like any car but obviously won't tune as well as a turbo car.

I was going to buy a Mark 1 Focus RS but I bought an M3 instead.
In a nutshell the M3 is built to do do it's job perfectly, modify a Focus RS (lovely car) and you'll have to uprate certain parts like the clutch I had an ST225 which was remapped and it was a great car but it ripped the clutch apart and the front tyres despite driving carefully.
I use my M3 as my daily driver and my Subaru as my fun toy, it's the wrong way around I know but I don't care about breaking the Subaru but I do care about breaking the M3

1st part is something ive never seen any evidence of, to say there are one group of people who drive the same marque who display the behaviour you are mentioning is bollocks, there is such a cross section of different people who own these cars as to make your statement utter drivel.
there are dickheads everywhere driving all different types of car very badly, so why single one marque out?
jealousy, pure and simple.
id have the focus but for the comedy/crappy interior.

I say M3. FOr the money compared to an FRS it's a no brainer.
I had an FRS for 2 years until August and it was the best car I owned. Reliable, quick, good looking etc. I px'd an Evo 8 which I had for 2 months until I got it sold and bought my E46 M3.
It's easy for people to say the FRS, and even I'm almost saying FRS, BUT think about it. 50k car new vs 20k car new. The current price isn't massively more for the beemer!
It feel fast and classy. Great.
