You will need a switched live feed to it and then there will be another connection leaving the gauge which connects to your sender.

Edit to say the "Coiled wire by the battery" will most likely be the live, this is what needs to be live with ignition.

You should already have the sender fitted and connected, so in theory you just need to splice that wire into a live feed which is live with ignition. You could splice into the stereo live but then it will come live with the radio, personally I don't like this as just like that to be for stereo, nothing else.

It sounds as if some numpty before hand just connected it to the battery which in fact you could do to test if the gauge works... Simply touch this wire onto the + terminal of the battery and start the car (Make sure it actually is the live to the gauge though)

You should have another wire coming from the gauge which then will connect to the sender, this is sometimes placed on a "Sandwhich Plate"

Oh rite well you need the sender as well which probably hasen't been fitted, so how many wires do you have on the back of the gauge?

Thats it, thats the common thing to do (Normally complimented with dashings of carbon fibre ) Look around your oil filter area to see if you can see a sender that has been fitted you should be able to see the wire for it underbonnet as well.
