I removed the replacement from a scrap car using a sharp metal chisel - i take it the Ka has snap-off bolts holding it on too?

Slide hammer always worked for me, or on some fords the lock is a metal bar that drops into the steering wheel you can take the cowling off and push the lock part up whilst taking the steering wheel off, Then just pull the pin out that holds the bar in place. Or you can just use a scaffold bar but this ruins the ignition. Im not a thief im a recovery driver/ mechanic.

The only way you will get the actual lock out of the barrel without damaging the barrel is to drill the lock out as already said. I take it you want to replace the lock so you need to watch out that you don't damage the barrel or the steering lock won't work when you replace the lock. You will need some quality drill bits tho and a bit of patience.

They should be able to take a door lock apart to get the code, then cut a new key.

get a key made from a door lock, peice of piss
doesnt help with the immob probs you will have but half way there
teh code can be taken from a door lock and if the locks match its the best £4 you will spend, you can then remove the locks to swap the whole system inc ecu or get a coded key cut then code it later when its rolling again
dont go drilling anything (if you really have to just go 1 mm each time and you sill soon get to the point where the lock falls to bits and you can dig each bit out til you turn the rear to get it all out)

Using a hacksaw blade, cut the barrel top between the barrel and the housing.
Once the top is off, remove each tumbler one @ a time. This gives you a key number as well if you need it.
Once the tumblers are out, twist the barrel inner part to the 1st position and then remove as normal.

Dismantle the door lock and get the key number, it's a piece of piss if you know your way around a ford lock (They were the same for like 30 years lol) and get a cheap blade cut. Use that to remove the barrel and happy days!

when you take the lock out you can remove the tumblers in order to read the code, best to get lock man to do all that and take it to him whole
many are readable (by stamped lines) by looking at the lock where the tumbler edges are visable and can be read (6 digits 1-4) but not always on them, ive had to build loads for ford dealers when i worked there
you could also build teh lcoks up to suit a key, if you had enough tumblers
111111 would mean an uncut key would fit, handy if you lose your only key

A door lock has less tumblers than an ignition so no good having one cut from a door, Boot locks and petrol caps have even less. Ford locks dont have numbers on them, you have to remove the tumblers and read the number from them 1-4. An ignition should have 6-7 tumblers. If youve got time go on bumpkeys.co.uk and buy the tibbie pick its really easy to use and handy for any future lost keys. Slide hammer is the quickest and dosnt damage anything apart from the barrel. Just screw the slide hammer in and bang away. Drilling the securing pin can be hard work and a lot of time, Where are you i have got a tibbie pick and slide hammer if your not to far away.

Isnt 4's the blanks so 444444 would mean any key would work not 1's

Yes your right the locks do need 6 tumblers to work but a door lock has more 4's (blank) so you cant just remove a door lock and have a key cut to fit the ignition. Fords did this as people was stealing boot locks and having a key cut to go back and steal the car. The later ford tibbie locks tumblers havnt got the number stamped on them.

its never been an issue fo rme, you wouldnt beleve how many keys a ford main dealer can lose, i was always taking doorlocks out to copy
the amount of times keys get locked under a focus bonnet often customers were asked for a spare key but they usually didnt have one or wanted to know WTF we did with the original
im amazed by anyone who can pick a lock tho, i dont get it, how the fuck is it possible?!
