Default Petrol Tanks

XR3i (or petrol injected Mk4) and RS Turbo Petrol tanks. Can anyone confirm they are different for certain and what is different about them?

Cool, so they both must have the pot inside, or "pump" probably what the tank place were on about. But they reckon the 86-89 tanks there wernt a pump inside but 89-90 there was

Mine is an 89 anyway so will go for the later one

Not sure about escorts m8 but the sierra tank with the large sender hole(100mm)
is internal pump, the small sender hole tank(50mm)is external pump, gravity fed.

Yer, they bth listed as large sender. He did say the later one was the internal jobbie. That will do then, just don't wanna get the wrong one and run into problems of fuel starvation

And apart from opening up the tank how can u tell if one is fitted?

on Efi models the pump/sender was 1 unit, when they say in the tank its just screwed in by 60 degrees, thats your fuel pump/ sender.

earlier mfi cars had the external bosch pumps under spare wheel well, if ordering for RS Turbo you want the early type tank from 86 on (also does the mfi XR3i), if an Efi XR3i then the 89 on tank with large sender hole.

as per lee, your pump will be between rear wishbones ie external

easiest thing to do would be measure your sender hole

Hi,

this is what I got emailed....

Good Afternoon,
The difference is the location of the pump
Up to 89 the pump is on the engine
89-90 pump is in the tank.
Now...to me that sounds like shit! I know my fuel pump is under the spare wheel well, I emailed him back asking if he ment swirl pot inside knew it wouldn't be pump...

Also...

They don't list a sender size, just "large sender" he did mention on the phone 5 1/2" so I better measure it...but then he was quoting me the 89-90 tank Maybe the 86-89 is smaller sender

Yer I am guessing....

Tank

Sender?

Now, the whole thing across as you see is about 5" not really 5 1/2" I assume that this is the sender unit which tells the petrol guage the fuel level, I am going by a haynes and the tank looks different

if you have an RS Turbo Mk4 order the 86-89 tank(small sender) even if your car is 1990-all RS Turbos (as far as i know anyway had pump under spare wheel well).

word of warning though-if ordering from sel before signing for delivery check it has swirl pot inside, we have a trade account with them and order quite a few tanks, quite a few of the pattern tanks havent got swirl pot.

Tricky,

The car is an 89 G. It has the fuel pump under the spare wheel well and connects directly to the tank, and yes like u i thought all rs turbos were like this

I will order the early one then, my next question, how do u know if the swirl pot is inside, can you spot it through the holes?

yep, look through sender hole and you should see the swirl pot, if it hasnt got one dont have it- you'll be bolloxed trying to go round corners and islands and keeping the engine running.

Can you supply them then? I'd rather buy of someone who knows what they are on about and get it right first time

OK,

Now I am really confused, (didn't realise they had pics on the website )

Here is my old tank....

On Website....

89 - 90 tank

86 - 89 tank

Now I know I don't wan't the 89 -90 tank as it has the fuel pump in it. but the outlet on the top of the tank for the 89 - 90 model is the same as my old tank and the outlet position of the 86 - 89 tank is not the same as mine (I am guessing that is the only difference outlet wise)

I think this outlet is where one of the fuel filler neck pipes connects on, now what do you suggest I do, will the different position 86 - 89 be ok to use? Won't order it till tomorrow now....

That's the thing Damo.....

I hadn't bothered looking inside it when I took it off, just though't i'd get a new one now it's off, but taking pics this morning and looking inside, it is like fooking new! thought it would all be full of shite when I drained it also, but It was so clean I put the petrol straight in my run about

I am gunna keep it, and rub it down and re paint it.
