passat tdi, quick and reliable and far cheaper than a golf.Oh,or its twin, audi a4,great as well.318is if you want something that looks ok too, plenty for that price, good reliable cars too.
Mondeo mk2 are pretty bombproof and so cheap right now,you could probably get a mk3 for that price, but I think a mint ghia x td mk2 with lowish miles could easily be had for a grand,a V6 for about half that.
MK4 polo are good, avoid french, italian, although the punto above is cheap as. Its all down to personal preference really.
If you want something daft then I know for a lexus ls 400 V8 for £600!!!!Drives as new,but it`ll cost you a bit in petrol.

I'd go with a mk2 Mondeo 1.8 TD mate. Reliable, comfy, well specced if you get a Ghia or Ghia X and cheap!!
I recently picked up a 2.5 V6 Ghia X with all the gadgets and leather trim for 350 quid and I love it! Ok, I know it's not a diesel but that's just an example of what's out there!

add a bit more and you can have my x reg mk4 astra G - low miles, fully serviced and runs happily on bio fuel. I get over 500 miles to a tank of bio which costs me £34
had a cambelt last year so nothing to worry about.
pm me if interested and will send you some pics.
im just bored of it now and work locally so dont really need a diesel anymore.

they get knocked but I have had a few rovers and to be honest they are pretty comfortable and usually well equiped.
Cheap as chips, if it is motorway work then would go for a 4 door saloon diesel which ever make you go for, will be a comfortable cruiser that is not struggling rather than a little town car that will be tinny and screaming its tatties off on the motorways.
