I was going to put up exactly the same topic!!

I've been looking and want to spend a maximum of £400 on my bike as I'm not totally into it just now, something more expensive is likely to be overkill. I went for a look at a local shop today, took out a Ridgeback, GT and Kona.. and out of the 3, I liked the Kona Fire Mountain the best but its all down to personal preference I suppose.

Cheers,
Grant

....meant to say, the general opinion seems to be to buy the best quality of frame you can and if/when things wear out then you can upgrade them in due course.

Other than dealing with the Halfords mongs I've been very happy with my Carrera Kraken. Not the 'coolest' brand, but it's a good bike. If you want to do proper full-on mountain biking you'll kill a £600 bike pretty quickly though!

not going to be doing anything too serious, just looking for something to do some weekend riding with my 6yr old son, lol

i take him to trent park so he can ride through the woodland area but im currently on foot as i only have a bianchi road bike.

only after something to ride along side him really. maybe do some small jumps. nothing like the jumps on the other thread.

i think im pretty set on this one really unless anyone else can show me a better bike for no more than £600.

http://www.winstanleysbikes.co.uk/pr...Disc_Bike_2010

forgot to mention im not a fan of specialized. i used a couple on just dont like them

Hydraulic Discs are a bit overkill IMO and they'll likely require more maintenance than a Cable Disc set up... so if you aren't totally 'into' the biking thing then it could mean potential problems through lack of proper care and maintenance?

I just got myself a Carrera from Halfords.... Its nothing that special.... Nothing serious at all

Paid £264 in the Bank Holiday sale just gone (£350 RRP)

I used to be in mountain biking a few years back and this is prob's the cheapest mountain bike ive had and i would say its not a bad bike for what i need it for anyway!

quite true i guess, i just dont want to buy a really shite bike,

£600 would be my absolute upper limit so anything up to that range id be happy with.

i think im going to go for the bianchi in my link above, either that or the scott as they both seem very alike. im a big fan of bianchi and use my road bike most days traveling to work and back, even cycled to southend last year on it,

its such a comfortable bike to ride.

just hope their mountain bike will make me just as happy

Have to say I find them fit and forget and less hassle than cable set ups.

I've had a Carrera Fury, was a good bike for the price.

I'd say the higher cost of the Scott or Bianchi would be worth it, they both have similar component specs which are better then the GT . Ive not had any experience of the Bianchi stuff but have had a Scott Reflex FX35 full-susser for the last few years and absolutely love it. Thye best way to decide is to actually ride them both and choose whichever one feels more natural to yourself. I get my bikes from Les's Cyles on Canvey Island as he lets you ride them all up the road. The last bike I bought was a Marin Lucas Valley hybrid, I tried about 6 different bikes before choosing that one. Two bikes in the same price bracket can feel so different. He also does good deals!

I have a 2010 Haro Fligthtline, you can get one for about £350 now, was £550 when it came out. Nice spec other than cable discs, which you can upgrade easy enough, I plan on doing a few upgrades on my bike in the couple of months I now have off the bike, after breaking my wrist in 3 places last thursday.

I have a Specialized Hardrock. It was £600.

Anyone wanting a bike should check if their work offers the "ride to work" scheme.

I'm using a scott aspect 35 at the mo. Really good off road bike and would recommend 1.
Its not given me any trouble even tho i've put it thru some fairly tough mountain trails.

Have a look on here for some bikes.

The Cube Acid looks good for the price.

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/C...ategoryID=1890

But thats at the top of your budget.

Discounted Trek..

Gary Fisher, albeit has cable disc brakes which are not that good but they are an easy riding bike.

Cant say I agree with that. I havent needed to bleed mine in a couple of years and pads are just slide in and out.

Cable discs are much worse for fiddly maintenance IME
