Default Anyone know about BT phone sockets

Basically been having a right nightmare for the last week where my internet would not connect, tried everything to sort it.

So tonight i tried the test socket on the main BT socket and it worked first time, so do i need to replace the whole socket or can i just replace the front panel thingy that you unscrew? and would BT do this for free since we have the phone with them?

The internet is from Orange though

The phone socket where I live doesn't have a test socket so I just wired me internet directly to the wires where they come through. Job jobbed.

have you got extensions on the line, as they may be the reason for your broadband problems, not just the nte faceplate,

I dont get why there is two sockets? whats the point in having a socket with a front removal panel with a few wires connected to it?

Also my internet is 0.50mb faster than its EVER been connected via this way

if you are going to change the socket make sure you get a "master" socket with little screws in the back you can connect the wires to rather than them "push in with a special tool" type sockets

Can i just run it from the test socket and not bother changing the plate or socket? because its working perfectly, i dont see any point apart from the fact ive got a little bit of plastic hanging down dangling from coloured wires

The point of it is for exactly what you have done, to prove the incoming line is good and there is a fault on the internal network.
Disconnect the wires from the faceplate and plug it back in.
Then plug your modem into the front of the faceplate, if it still works, the fault is on the wiring or sockets around the house.
If the modem doesn't work it's the faceplate.
My money is on the internal wiring or something you have plugged into another socket.

dm08, notice that the extension connections to connect the other sockets in the house connect to the faceplate, thats the reason for having it

anyway personally i'd buy a proper ADSL filtered faceplate for about a tenner. something like this:
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...84038&T=Module

that way you can also do away with microfilters etc.

I use an ADSL V1.0 socket, which is essentially the same idea as what Jim posted above. Only snag is that if the filter fucks up, which from time to time they do, you can just throw another filter in there, you need a whole new faceplate.

As others have said, plugging into the test-port, as its called, is simply and quickly eliminating the internal extensions. No reason why you can't leave it like that providing you don't want your extensions to work! LOL.
