Default Windows Media Centre.......

I am i right in reading somewhere that you can only get this if you buy a new pc system and/or base unit??

Can it not be 'acquired' and up loaded onto a newly rebuilt pc with all the right cards?

I'd quite like it, but like most people i dont wanna pay full price for it

Can anyone shed somelight on the situation??

CraigN, what a load of crap, sorry mate

We have a cube PC in the lounge with Media Center 2005 and it is bloody amazing! Bought the PC completely blank (just a boggo Duron with ATi card) and installed our own copy of Media Center.

Whats the USB ports about?? You don't need any at all! If you use a windows media remote you will need one but thats it..

It is a bit of a pain in the arse to get working right (ATi didn't make any widescreen drivers for the card we used for a couple of months) but it is amazing when its on!

Use a Black Gold digital TV card and it works like a freeview box but the program guide is a million times better (better than Sky+ even) you can record/pause live TV, schedule recordings of a whole series, play all your music on there, slide shows of your photos etc.

We use it all the time!!! Dowload all your favourite American series off the net and it's like watching them on TV (Joey, 24, Scrubs etc) instead of on a poxy computer and arsing around setting up the telly as a second display and switching them around etc.

Now it's all setup and working ours is just like any other telly addon box, no keyboards/mice/monitors/rebooting etc. Just turn the telly on and use the remote!

You can indeed buy Windows XP Media Center 2005 Edition. You can buy it from www.ebuyer.com (OEM Version) you have to buy a piece of hardware with it (a Ł0.89 mouse will do)

Media Center is great. It comes with a remote control and all your content and TV, Music pictures etc can be viewed from a distance though what is called the 10Foot UI.

The company I work for makes loads of Media Center machines. I was responsible for the machine on the front cover of PC Pro this month. They have a really good feature on Media Center this month. My company had three of the ten machines on test and were the best three! We won both awards.

Windows Media Center is one of those things, it's hard to explain how good it is until you pick up the remote and use it. I love it. I've got my entire CD collection stored on a machine. All the Album Art is downloaded from the net automatically. I've got an Artisan LX plugged into my plasma and it's great. Pause Live TV, Record TV. Burn TV to DVD.

I've been recently working on a new machine which is a 32" LCD with a media Center PC inside but no thicker than a normal LCD! (Called the Lumina)

Here is a pic of the Lumina and a few pics of the Media Center interface:

Free Electronic Program Guide - Simply press Record on the Remote once and it will record. Twice and it will record the whole series! If you have Sky you get the guide for sky etc. Cable, Freeview...

So is this something that we could discuss for our up and coming meeting?
