SHOCKING MPG from my GTTDi ****SORTED****
****sorted****
Wonder if anyone can shed any light?
First short trip in it today.
Driving back from work, I thought I would see what MPG I could get (14miles trip)
I managed to get 34!!! With my GT TDI110 I would have got over 50!
It wasnt motorway, but lots of stopping and starting and coasting as much as possible.
I'm thinking either MAF sensor (doesnt ever hold back or anything like that tho) or temp sender (the needle stays as it should on the instrument display)
Ive got both cars at the moment (PD115 and normal gttdi 110) so can swap parts over to test..
Anyone got any ideas?
Edit to say: Whacking it on a VagCom tomorrow....

My GT TDI 150 only sees mid 30's around town with stopping, starting, sitting in traffic etc. It's only once it gets on the motorway that I get 50's...

Tiff, I have to moan, I need every bit of MPG I can get. I dont earn as much as you
Chris, I dont believe it has climate control, only air-con...
Did a vagcom on the faults today....
17664 Coolant temp sensor G62 Open Circuit P1256
17965 Turbo Pressure Control Limit P1557
17978 ECU blocked P1570
Cleared all the codes, and turned car back on and didnt get anything. Will get them checked again tomorrow....
Im guessing the turbo pressure fault was due to when the turbo blew up and the ecu blocked one is an attempt at starting the car at some point with immobiliser still enabled
Where is the temp sensor on the gt tdi's? Ive got 2 golfs and can swap them over and test tomorrow.
Is this a good bet at the low MPG?

I've always found my dash display (Mk4 Golf 1.8T) to be pretty accurate with regard to MPG readings? At the most 3 mpg out. Climate control has no bearing on my MPG either - i've run it for a full tank with it on, and then another when off, and there is no difference.

How have you measured it? The mpg-ometers are more of a guide than an accurate measure. Run it for more miles, and then see what it says.
Brim it, record the miles, then brim it again to get a more accurate measure of mpg.
I wouldn't start worrying unless I had a good few tanks, all reading low. Mid 30s around town isn't exactly great but it's not really shocking.

On a plus side, I bought an £8 cable of eBay to use VAGCOM and it works with windows 7 x64!

you need to do the brim test
top it up, do the mileage, then top it up again and do the mileage and work it out like that
i put up a post about a year ago when my car did some funny numbers, but using the brim method i found that the computer was telling me the truth for the first part of the journey, but when i went back the other way it was telling me LIES DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i've since been otld that some cars ave mpg is measured for the previous section of mileage so you may have reset it and it showed good mileage, but after a shite period it will show you worse for the next 20 miles or so

I was under the impression that the vag mpg reading was the avg over the previous 40 miles only, I'm probably wrong tho.
I get 40mpg easily with my 1.8t, so I'd expected a oil burner to get at least that.

Yes it is from when it was last reset. If you turn the car off it doesnt reset itself until a certain amount of time has elapsed. I always check the miles traveled so I know when it last reset itself (I never reset it).

Apprently the mondeo bases it on the last 200 miles unless you reset it
doing the battery disconnect/dial sweep reset gives you instant mpg based on the car being factory fresh rather than a reset from the button for avg mpg (range is still based on the 200 mile thing)

coasting is actually worse than letting off when it comes to eco driving, if you leave it in 5th down a hill then the engine is pretty much bein turned over by the wheels with barely any fuel being injected, if you coast out of gear the engine has to inject more fuel to turn the engine over itself, sitting with the engine running for 3 minutes is roughly 1 miles worth of fuel, i didn't believe it till i tried and it makes a big difference, my mk2 escort with a 1660 xflow lump on bike carbs returns 44 mpg on motorways with a 4 speed box.

I got 512 miles from a brimmed tank to about 10 miles after the fuel light came on today and it took 52 litres so just shy of 45mpg and that again was mixed driving and my dash average for the tank was 44.8mpg

Sounds like you need to change the coolant temperature sensor as that is the first error that VAG Com has brought up they are only about 20 quid a take 2 mins to change, there well known for failing VW updated them to a green topped sensor,

I took both sensors off the car last night (one of each of the cars). .. damn, they are different.
Bought a new one off ebay for a tenner, will give that a whirl when it arrives..
Boost kicks in REALLY early compared to my 110, as in about 1500 revs, its MUCH more agressive than the 110.
But I cant drive it at less than 1500 all the time and wonder if its just getting used to driving it?
