I would imagine the car you are looking at is priced less than non-write off's. So when you come to sell it, you can expect to get way less for it.

Yeah but your not really saving anyting, as what it saves yuo on purchase price you loose when (IF) you can sell it.

Any car on the HPi says DODGY to me. Stay well away. There are millions of straight cars out there instead.

Catd not a problem but insurance will pay less for it if it get wrote off and worth a bit less when you sell it. I wouldnt be put off from buying one depending on damage etc. Most people dont check especially with old cars etc

as long as the price reflects its status and any work done isnt botched then yes i would buy a cat c or d.
although many would run a mile.

I've had 6 cat d's, wouldn't hesistate, last mk2 astra I got was written off for a badly dented sill along the whole length, stolen recovered, never even bothered knocking the sill out, painted them black and you had to really look to see it.
Me gf's present car is a mk3 astra, that was written off for a DENT, about 3mm deep and 1" long, valued at £450, the persons insurers who damaged it and my own insurers said write off, I said fine give me the money, that was 4 years ago, I still drive the car and it is still insured with the same insurer as at time when it was hit, the claim was due to PI, but car was officially written off, so what, does the job, never did fix the damage, keep forgetting and have to hunt for it whe I remember it's that slight, but mate quoted for a complete rear 1/4 so!!

i know many people who have owned prev damaged cars and have been wrote off etc, insurnace paid out same as normal money

theres a minority of plonkers out there who call for a quote and tell them its cat c d etc they then get all funny

you never was aware the car had history like that, you paid good money for it, they still have to be seen to offer enough to replace simples.

Insurance won't touch cat c/d?complete and utter bollox, cat c is a VEHICLE IDENTITY CHECK,it has nothing whatsoever to do with the extent of damage to a car,it just tells the government that the car hasn't been rung, but it's questionable that it covers that even!!the test takes ten minutes at the most, they don't check any of your repairs and it's nothing to worry about.it was labours idea to get old cars off the road and make us drive Eco friendly stuff etc by attaching this stigma too cars, many of which as described are written off for broken wing mirrors and scratched panels.as the last assesor said to me about an l reg fiesta that was damaged" this won't take long,if the ashtrays full I'm writing it off".Don't be afraid of cat c/d.cat d is pretty much widely accepted as notihing to worry about and rarely affects insurance payouts, cat c can be much harder to move on as the logbooks marked then although 90% of people wouldn't even know where to look for the info.generally as a rule, people who won't touch cat d's etc tend to be quentin Wilson types who phone you and ask is the "car" for sale rather than is the escort etc. for sale to try and catch you out.catch you out for what, trading a few cars?how will those cars be any better/worse than the ones you get from a "little old lady".Where I used to work the boys changed their cars every 10 months or so,I had a fiesta zetec s brand new and did 29000 in 10 months,I put new tyres on it and corrected it to 6000 miles,so that cars already been clocked, if I'd owned that car for three years I'd guarantee it would be touching 60k for it's first mot,but what's to stop me clocking it each year so it looks like it's done say 9k for it's first mot?fuck all!!! Basically, buy the car on merit,if you like it and the price is right and everything seems ok,go for it.quick bit of advice though, some unscrupulous traders have been known in their time to sell a car as cat c/d to prevent you doing a hpi check as you think there's no point as the traders been honest, for £30 do it,there maybe finance etc owing on it and you could have a real hard time with it all.

CAT C details are actually recorded on the V5 now, (please no-one say they aren't because I had one not long ago) so I think that'll always mean they command a lower price.

I've bought several CAT D and C cars in the past, they need bits of work but most of them are better in the end than a lot of so called 'good' cars that are for sale, because a lot of the ones that have been put up for sale are to try and get rid because they have problems, insurance writeoffs were probably usually cars people had no intention of selling til they were written off.

That'll teach me to speed read. The last one I bought was a CAT C Escort Cabriolet and it was an absolutely cracking car.

ps Huw, that's a really nice RS Turbo you've got for sale.
