abandoned cars how to find the owner
Hi people
right just a quick question, there is a car round the corner from me parked in
a flat parking lot, chapped a few doors in the flat and they say it belongs to
the people on the top floors mates who dont live there anymore ......
and it has been sat there for the past 5years.
so who do i phone to find out who owns this car
so i can sort out a deal.
any idea's where i stand????
thanks Martin

Contact the DVLA and ask them if they can contact the owner on your behalf. If they say they can get them to pass on your contact details so that the owner can then contact you direct and hopefully strike a deal. Remember to do a HPI check on the car before committing to the deal.

Result !!! If ever you want to sell it i'll give you a grand for it, that way you've made a good profit and i've got one of my "must have before i die" cars.

Not any more, think the law changed about that.
Claiming the car through the logbook is still theft, although you are the registered keeper you are not the OWNER. So whoever actually owns the car is well within their rights to come get it back.
At least your doing it the right way

Easiest way is to apply for the logbook, they will issue a letter to the current registered keeper stating that someone has applied to get the registration docs (IIRC they have 2 weeks to reply before they issue it in your name). Then when you get the docs, the previous details are on there.

put a note on it and wait for response.....or get one of those comunity police bods to do a vehicle check on his radio or even better a normal copper...i applied for a log book from dvla when i saw something i liked but had not moved for over 5 yrs got it through the post job done never heard anything else.........

there was a car trader down our way single bloke who died, he had over 40 cars, some in garages some being painted some in auction houses, the ones that were taxed were scattered about in our area just parked up, he allways left the docs in the glove box as it was easier for him. according to his friends only 5 were ever found, i expect dvla removed em after a while dodgy garages kept some maybe a few someone claimed who knows lol, deffo a good 50 odd grands worth of cars dissapeared

right anyway after a day of phoning alot of people this is where i am
phoned the dvla as said they cant issue details or pass on details but they
have sent a form out that i have to fill in and pay the massive £2.50 and after 14days
they willl send the previous owners contact details, they also told me to
call the local police and council to try and get some info that way.
the police said the same data protection and that, and its off the road
so could do anything,
called the local council and it isnt there estate turns out there were a few
housing companies been in there over the years so no joy that way.
was at the flat and rang all 4 bells but no answer mybe try again tonight.
so i dont know should i wait for these details to come through or just apply
for the details?
thanks for all the help people

Most likely the DVLA will send a letter to one of the flats were the car is (Old owners place) and they wont hear anything back so the car will be yours (As a registered keeper).

My misses mate just had similar.
She banged her car up drink driving years back. Banned for a good few years so parked it at her flat and it has sat ever since. the other month it vanished (a few months before she was due to get it back on the road)
The car wasn't registered to that flat as she had only just moved in when she bumped it, the flats belonged to a friend so wasn't registered as living there and pretty much nobody knew it was her car.
She found out who took it and they had to pay her for the car in the end to avoid 'unwated complications'.
Not to say this is the case, but if it is parked on private land then I would think it is theft when you actually take the car.
