Towing a car with no mot, tax or insurance
Guys,
I need to tow my car to a friends house so i can get it washed but what is the law on towing a vehicle if it doesnt have any mot, tax or insurance.
The tow car is completely legal.
whats the law on this?

I think it's still illegal mate.
I remember watching a traffic cops style show and I'm sure they nicked a guy for doing just that. Although it's not being driven under it's own power, it's still not in a roadworthy condition and they deem towing to be still on the road. Their arguement was if the tow rope/ bar came loose and the towed car hit a pedestrian/other vehicle, how would a claim be settled if there was no insurance.
Safest bet's a trailer mate.

Sorry mate, out of luck again.
The only way you'd get away with that is if the car was booked in for an MOT and you were travelling there.

I don't make these bloody laws!! It's a pain in the a$$ I know! I had the same dilemma a couple of years ago. I took the risk at the time, but personally with the amount of ANPR and trigger happy traffic cops I wouldn't risk it now!

im literally going up the road and back again

I got off lucky had no insurance tax or mot towing my van with a brace, they gave me a Ł60 fine as they sympathized i was moving address and it was literally 2 miles down the road.
Could have been a whole lot worse.

If you can use a towing dolly, with 2 wheels off the ground it becomes a trailer, as in it is "trailing" behind the tow car, and needs nothing as trailers don't need anything, if all four wheels on the ground needs the lot, unless as said pre-booked in at mot place.

The big problem is that the government want your tax disc money. This is from
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring...cle/DG_4022059
What if you don’t tax or make a SORN
If you have not made a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) and your vehicle is not taxed, an automatic penalty of Ł80 will apply. Your vehicle could also be clamped and taken away from you.
There’s no way out
Your vehicle doesn’t need to be seen on the road for an offence to have been committed. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) carries out a check of its records each month to identify untaxed vehicles. DVLA has the authority to carry out enforcement action against you using the information held on its records.
As well as this, DVLA works in partnership with the police and local authorities in operating wheelclamping schemes. Using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) they identify, clamp and tow away untaxed vehicles.
Members of the public can also report an untaxed vehicle online or by calling the national untaxed vehicles telephone hotline.
What will happen if you don't make a SORN
If you don’t make a SORN or tax your vehicle you could be stopped by the police.
You’ll get an automatic penalty of Ł80, as well as paying for a new tax disc.
You could also get a County Court Judgment against you, and be fined a minimum of Ł1,000.
The maximum penalty for making a false SORN, when the vehicle is actually used or kept on a public road, is Ł5,000 and imprisonment.
Your vehicle could be clamped by one of DVLA's wheelclamping partners. You’ll need to pay to have your vehicle released as well as producing a valid tax disc or a surety fee if no disc is available. If you fail to pay, your vehicle will be impounded, incurring storage charges. If you don’t pay the release or storage fees, your vehicle could be crushed or sold.

There was a long thread on here regarding exactly this and it concluded the car must have all three, tax mot INS unless it's on a trailer hence all four wheels off the ground, the car he was towing was taxed and moted but no insurance.they were total wankers about it all, phoning back and forth trying to do him for it,totally prickish!!I'd take the chance of towing it tbh as if you drive it down you risk the chance of it breaking down, bumping someone else etc which is less likely if your towing.realistically if you get caught driving it you probably WILL be done over, whereas if towing you can probably plead innocence!!!

But it currently it CAN'T be towed (legally) as has been confirmed more than once in this thread!
Lots of people do lots of things that aren't entirely legal... is it worth the risk just to wash it? Get a car cover
Get an empty 20 litre drum (hell I'll even post you one!) fill it with warm water, take your filled drum and cleaning gear to the garage

the way to do it is insure the car when you want to move it at the time you book it in for a mot so if stopped your taking it for a mot but if you do get stopped you would have to take it for a mot.

zo - i got a car cover but am not going to use if the car is covered in dirt as it will only scratch.
I did think about pre-booking it but if i get stopped i can hardly blag im going for an mot when the car is being towed
think i may just have to leave it as it is until i get the thing running.
