Right folks, sprayers in da house etc..
I'd like to get my bumper and bonnet sprayed soon-ishhh, nothing major tbh just me being ANAL as per..
Thing is and i'm NOT TOO clued up on paint jobs, i was told there's 30 something shades of the White of my 3dr...
?? and i'm abit concerned if i have it done will it match?? as i know of a concours 3dr that had a bonnet spray and if you look VERY carefully you can see the miss-match so to speak.
So, painters etc how is it matched etc??
Sorry for sounding GEEK-ISH but i haven't a clue woth spray jobs etc....
PS, or would you just leave as is so it's original??

matched with paint chips mate ,colour chart been a solid colour you carnt blow it into
the wings ,but a good paint shop will match it ,if the rest of the paint work isn't to
faded
a good painter will spray colour chips to try an match best he can ,but that all
adds up money wise

Hi fella,if you go to any paint supplies they'll mix diamond White the same way as they always do,I've never delved into asking for an exact shade of diamond White and I'd be very surprised if the program would even recognize a difference let alone the mixing guy actually get it right.really,if your painting a bonnet and a bumper I'd always recommend blending into the wings as although your car looks beautiful it will have suffered some paint fade over the years which was probably why when you saw the concours one,it most certainly would have been a different shade as fresh paint always looks different.what you could try is going to the paint suppliers yourself and stress to them what the car is and how really important it is to mix it exactly to the spec of your year of diamond White as you don't want to make it any less original than you have too, even offer to bung em a bit more for their trouble.any probs,pm me on here.

Take your point but you can get the mix in basecoat and laquer so you could do it that way,put colour over the repairs/redone paintwork and just laquer into the wings to blend,I don't like edge to edge.

aslong as iv painted i never heard any one mixing diamond white or any old ford colour in base coat
most likely if you take it some were now they will match it in water base so will do wings anyway
ps not adig just stating my opinion

Totally agree but it could be done in basecoat/laquer but of course far easier in 2k,I think you'd be hard pressed to notice a shade difference as long as it's matched nice, personally I'd paint the whole front end to keep it sweet.ps no offence taken!!!!

it will show in my opinion.
noticed on mine at certain angles in direct sunlight, basically a pillar forward was painted. (wings, bumper, bonnet) for same reason as yours.
and it was painted like 10 years ago.
I think due to the age of the paint and the pigment change over time i think its going to be very hard not to make it noticable

No personal experience at all. Guess i'm just jumping on the bandwagon..... or maybe, just maybe im going on the massive amount of evidence on here which proves hes a cunt and a shite painter?
As for the colour match, basing up the bonnet and wings and going on to the tops of the wings and clear coating the rest of the wings is the way to go, belive it or not putting clear coat over the orignal colour can still change it a little though.
the reason i had both sides of my moonstone 3 door painted, front bumper and bonet was just because it had a few chips on the front and ended up having most of it painted so it didn't show.
even a paint job that looks great can look shocking when your filling up at the petrol station one evening as there lights bring out the different shades.
there wasn't many chips that stood out on your car at pod can't you just touch them up.

I would probably risk edge to edge to be honest. Either way its a compromise as base and clear will look different to 2k. If you find a decent bodyshop and explain that you want a close as possible and don't mind the cost then they should get it close.

Thanks for the info folks, really appreciate all you helpful comments..
Hmm, i'm kinda concerned now after reading all your replies, i DON'T want a car that you can see miss matched paint so to speak..
i guess i'll leave it as is, tbh it's only just the nigly stone chip etc and a few chips on the bonnet, but me being anal as i am i would of liked them doing...

Use a recommended old school painter if you can. They'll tint it themselves to get as good a match as possible and do spray outs first to check it.
I remember everyone raving about the 'Prologic' computer at Morellis years ago that would examine the sample and match it spot on
no substitute for a good eye and matching skills IMO
Not keen on the base and clear option if the rest of the car isn't done in that way myself and it's a proper motor

Im a painter and i painted the front end of my 3door in base and clear painting the whole bonnet, the whole bumper, blending the wings but keeping the colour away from the edge of the wing leading to the door to get the colour match and then laquering the whole job. mine looks spot on
True - the photo's make it more noticable. In real life it is hard to pick. Not saying it is perfect - just that diamond white from the can was worse!
Doesnt help that the bonnet is not level with the wings in the photo. Look towards the back of the bonnet where it is level and it looks better.

Dave/Jay,
Yes i think you're both right tbh, i'd worry too much about the match etc, few stone chips aren't going to hurt it to be fair.
Cheers for all the info/input guys, appreciated...

Don't get too hung up on getting a perfect colour match,I'd say your car looks stunning and probably dosent need any painting but if you do need to in the future as I said don't be afraid to call down to a small paint supplies in your area, call in the afternoon as deliveries are usually in the morning and they won't be so helpful.explain what you want and they'll probably mix a tenth of a litre up for you to compare, keep some thinners handy while your there and just dab it onto the bonnet,it'll thin straight off.then you can ask them to tint it anyway you like to exactly match up,as long as they make a note of how much tinter is used then you've got your formula and can get a load mixed up.btw that 3dr shell looks stunning but I can see from 300 miles away the colour is miles out, again best to go on a sunny day as light really affects it,petrol station forecourts will show up poor paintwork but that's mainly down to poor prepwork and may often dissapear with a good cut and polish.
Pete, just to clarify...
You're going to try and get a 100% paint match to touch up some stone chips, on a previously unpainted, 35,000 mile minter of a 3 door..........

I'd hate to fook it up, or have it wrongly coloured etc, will completely fook the car up then....
