I always thought that if it was booked in for a MOT you can drive it without tax and mot aslong as you have insurance

As far as I know as long as it's booked and it is insured you can drive it directly to and from the MOT station.

I did this last week and I shall be again this week
Asked on here and at the plod shop and got the same anwser, you are legally entitled to drive your car to and from a pre-booked mot, you could still be stopped and the car will be need to be roadworthy or they will not be happy
Obviously you must be insured

Thats what I thought too. Drive directly to the mot station and you should be fine.

needs to be insured
then you can drive to & from the MOT station as long as the MOT test is prebooked with the registration number plate

however some insurance companies won't cover the car if it doesn't have an MOT, bit of a grey area for generalising, would depend on insurer.
but no tax and going to a pre booked mot is fine.

Isn't that just a load of crap though that the Police & the media use to try and scare you?

My understanding is if the car is damaged without an MOT it doesn't hold the same value as with an MOT and would be written off easier and the payout would be less. That is what I have heard when people have forgotten to renew their MOT.

So if you have 2 stations, one 4 miles away and the other(that you normally go to) is 8 miles then you'd have to go to the 4 mile away one.

Are you sure mate?
Only, I asked plod as I normally take mine to a centre in Bracknell and they said it doesn't matter where it is it only has to booked in
As it is mine isn't booked into my nearest one now but a garage I trust with my car

I am sure chip took his Nova 100 miles to a test centre to MOT'd ages ago. I think he was going to get other work done too at the same time, but he had no problems with it

i don't agree, i looked at my policy last year and all cars i drove to be covered needed to be road worthy and hold a valid MOT certificate.
otherwise it was deemed invalid, also bear in mind without a certificate it may not be road worthy and be more likely to cause an accident.
and before someone jumps in and says a car may have an MOT certificate and be unsafe, then fair point too, but as long as you have the certificate you can claim due diligence and argue it should have been safe and you did what was needed to meet minumim government testing guidelines/rules.

as long as it is a reasonable distance away then they shouldn't kick up a fuss, taking it a couple of hundered miles to get away without taxing etc. for delivery/collection would be deemed unreasonable.

from the police point of view, yes your fine to drive the car too, and from a registered test station, long as the car is booked in for test.

now the problem is, if somehow you have an crash, or someone hits you, then your insurance could well be void. But some insurance company's allow this.. Its like trade plates, you can drive them without any valid tax or mot, yet you are still insured.

it happens so, that insurance company's can void the insurance even if the car is un-road worthy even with a valid mot.

so you can take the risk, but you wont be prostituted by a Tax van/car or the police.

When mine last went for its MOT, I driven by a marked car doing Tax checks, mot ect.. VOSA and was pulled up about 500yards down the road, to where i told them im off for an MOT.. Now i could be done for driving the car without any valid tax, unless i could prove otherwise.

A letter from the garage, the time of the MOT, and the system proves it, case closed.

And I rang my insurance prior to driving it..

It is not obvious as you are incorrect. You can take your vehicle to any MOT station you like, 10 miles or 100 miles away, as long as it is pre-booked and the vehicle has valid insurance.

Furthermore, you can legally drive a vehicle to a place of repair for any work required to pass an MOT - again the stipulations are that the vehicle is insured and pre-booked. Road fund license is not required.
