Could be worth checking/renewing gearbox oil and checking for play in gear selector rod balljoints.

sounds like a problem i had with my old mk3 golf gti, it just would not select 1st 2nd and sometimes 3rd on random ocassions, oh yeah and reverse, just would not go in.

Sometimes double clutching made it go in, but you will find it will get worse and worse and happen more often if you leave it.

As it happens i was selling my golf so i never got it fixed

could very well be your clutch on it's way out mate, i had exactly the same problem at first it would get stuck in 4th after giving it a blast it was a 1.4 then cure itself it got worse and i started having trouble with all the gears was fine when cold but after a bit of a run it would play up, is it biting pretty high, i'd take a guess your clutch is on it's way out tbh as it sounds just like what i had

lol it wont do mate i had exactly the same if you have a search through my threads i'v posted i had exactly the same it wasn't uniform i didn't think it was the clutch at first but fitted one just to rule it out and it cured the problem straight off, the clutch wasn't even to the rivits neither and also it never slipped i just used to get a problem selecting gears every now and again like said it'd mainly get stuck in 4th for me but when it got really bad it started to do it in most gears, i was told the selector and that but if it'll still select gears once engine is off then the linkage should be fine.

try the gearbox oil first as it's the easiest and cheapest but then i'd be looking at your clutch, when was it last changed and how many miles has it got?
