Have you released the release bearing? These need releasing (Look in the black rubber bung on top of the box) before the box will seperate.

Yep, and when your putting it back on, you need to push the clutch fork against the release bearing quite hard until it snaps in place. the clutches on the imprezas actually pull the release bearing not push against it which is why the fork snaps onto the bearing.

Using a screwdriver, release and detach the retainer spring clip assembly from the ball pivot in the bellhousing. You now can remove the withdrawal lever along with the clutch release bearing (throwout bearing) and hub assembly. Inspect the withdrawal lever for cracks or damage. It may be necessary to remove the bearing from the hub with a two- or three-jaw puller.

This had my brother puzzled for a while. Then when I had to do one he told me how to do it and it still took 30mins to an hour to work out which clip to undo

Good luck mate, that garage is not the biggest

You need to remove the pin that the clutch fork pivots on. It should be underneath a plug on the top left side of the box. The plug is the 10mm allen key bit that you have been told about.

Yes^

In the pic you've posted you can see the clutch fork dangling there (black bit) normally it'd have a bar going through it to pivot on. As stated above.. from roughly where you've removed the starter motor you'll see a cap with a 10mm allen hole sunk in, undo that and then you'll have a hole where the end of the fork pivot bar can be felt, you then need to screw a bolt into the end of it (m6 or m8 can't remember) and then lever it out pulling on the bolt. Then the clutch fork can be lifted out of the release bearing and that'll allow you to remove the engine.

The red bit is where the bar would be you need to remove, arrow shows (obviously from other side though) where the cap is to remove and you'll find the end of the pivot pin there to screw a bolt into

biggest pain are the front shafts if you dont split the ball joints, I usually just undo the 2 engine mounts and jack up each side of the engine and lever the shafts off (remembering to take out the split pins, and remembering to line the spline holes on shafts and G/box when re-fitting!) if you dont know about the clutch pivot pin then it's a pain, but other than that its all pretty straight forward! even easier with a front mount IC

i'v always found if your keeping the ball joints then hit the arm with a hammer where the ball joint sits whilst levering it out, or have a jack under the disk or anywhere that you can push the hub up and take pressure off the arm, push it up slightly on the springs and repeatedly hit the arm with a hammer where the ball joint sits and it's never failed me and always saves the rubber if using the jack i'd be inclined to use a lever too just to help things along, just a heads up if you really can't be arsed to change the rubber next time you get round to it.

Ginge, those balljoint splitters are good aye, but as you say always fuck the rubbers...I use them as a last resort after smacking 7 shades of shite out the arm the balljoint is in!

2 hammers, one each side of the arm, have been working for me way before these fancy splitters were available.

its amost in mate, must admit you inspired me all them years ago when you done your escos on your drive on your own,,,, thought if some scouser can do it how hard can a 4wd car REALLY be ? pmsl

oh and ill have you know that i fitted the coilovers, polly bushed the entire car and fitted all the whiteline stuff to the car,,,,, oh and i also fitted the bluetooth hands free kit aswell

the plan is to finish this car,,,, inlike the cossy but this is locked away in the roughest council estate you can imagine,,,,, people are scared to walk through here at night so it wont be nicked ( runs and grabs a bit of wood)

2 weeks till the ring,,,,,, LOADS of time im sure pmsl

coilovers and suspension was all done at once,,,,, you dont wanna know the bill for a full powerflex kit as in EVERYTHING THEY MADE , HKS hypermax with pillowball top mounts, whiteline antilift kit, front and rear roll bars, rear solid drop links and it DID have rosejointed adjustable front links,,,,, but then split apart going up my mates driveway,,, 110 quid well spent there then !!!

also got mintex touring car spec pads front and rear too

after fitting all that,, 2 weeks later i drove it into a lampost so REALLY done well for handling,,,,, guess they aint snow spec suspension pmsl
