wrong. in simple terms it needs to be hot to combust

i suspect that you are getting confused by the term 'compression ignition' engine, but that just means that the compression process increases the temperature of the diesel/air mix until it ignites, but it's the temperature that does it, not the pressure.

You need a suffiecient quantity of each of: fuel, heat, and oxygen
in order to get a burn

in a petrol pump you are missing enough heat and enough oyxygen

is this why you shouldn't fill up with the engine running? - i do this all the time, am i an explosion waiting to happen!?

should think its lots of reasons all at once like because there is more chance of your car catching fire when the engine is running than when its not, and if it catches fire you dont want to be pouring petrol into it.
also it could jump into gear accidently if you have a child or pet in the car and they knock the lever and make it drive off and rip the pump line out the pump
etc etc

just generally speaking something is more likely to go wrong with the engine running than not

I never saw the point in running the engine, you're just burning fuel unnecessarily as you're putting it in

I would guess that in-tank pumps are brushless too and therefore don't arc...
