I noted the M5 V10 pulled 186mph was it?? Circa the 507bhp....just out of curiosity and not for an argument i am genuinely interested, this is faster than the 500bhp Saffs of old which weighed what 400 kilos lighter with lots more torque. So what made the M5 with the same sorta power beat a Saff?
Better brakes? Better aerodynamics? Better driver?
Well it actually genuinely being over 500bhp in the car helps
a lot of the 500+ cossies out there are no such thing, some of them used to be, or were on the dyno, but far less actually are in reality.
But aerodynamics will play a massive part too of course.
Weight doesnt really have very much of a bearing on top speed.

also gearing will make a difference, doing 186mph in 5th normally requires either very high revs or a longer ratio diff/5th gear.
If a cossie is producing 500bhp at 7200rpm, and for example you needed 8k to hit 186mph, your not gonna be producing 500bhp at that rpm hence its hard to hit that speed as you may only have 450bhp or less.
probably at 186mph in the m5 your still in its powerband as it has 7gears to use

.My car has done the same speed at Brunters (less 1mph), so does that prove it has got 500bhp now, given it is less aerodynamic than an M5?

What peggy acheived that? How much you spent getting it to that? Is it reliable? .... i'd know what i'd rather be in

FAST car
Phil's M5 will probably never see 3 figures while he owns it

You are joking of course as its very hard to stay in 2 figures! Pulled 17*mph in the amg the other day on a private road...shit myself so slowed up..lol.

.Peggy is on 3.9 gearing, so would need a tall cliff to go faster than 175

400kg lighter and more torque though....
Chip you say weight doesnt affect top speed, surely at Brunters in the space it would effect it due to a heavier car having a harder time to stop than the lighter Saff?

Those are two seperate issues though. Granted, that for the purposes of the Vmax events the two are interlinked, but I'd wager the BMWs braking distances would be shorter than a Saph with an expensive set of aftermarket stoppers.

depends on brakes aswell, an m5 will have better brakes than most cossies, even with the extra weight, the 400kg may help it get from 60-130 quicker, but after that aero comes in force
at vmax they dont brake so late that they risk crashing, the marker isnt at the very end, normally when people go with the mags use the maximum distance they can get away with to give them the best chance.

Mike what marker did you use to acheive your top speed? Also Rod at 500bhp did you use the same marker as VMAX? Or whatever power you have acheived your top speeds?
I presume they had a marker on the day, we take people out and advise a very safe braking zone. I would imagine that Rod/Mark left it as late as they dared. So depending on where the marker was it does make the M5's speed very impressive. Having said that, the extra 20mph that Rod's car achieved is still staggering.
Anyone know what happened to that 9ff Porsche that crashed!

I think they front end broke loose under braking and it ended up bouncing up and over the grass banking. Both of the people in it got away without any serious injuries , the driver actually came back towards the end of the day as a spectator.

Interesting?
All the times we have been there, the runway has been partitioned off with tyres in the last 3-400m where they have stored cars, so we have been limited on space. If the 9ff car hit the banking at the end, that sounds like they moved all the cars for this event and gave them the full length (oh er
)?
Check this video for what I mean (see 1min) (although the cars have all disappeared):

Unless the 9ff car went through the tyres out of control
