Default help to spec my cosworth 4x4 engine to approx 450bhp

I know there is going to be a million + 1 different options and answers but i thought id ask anyhow,

The thing is my project is costing a vast amount of money to build and i have yet to sort the engine side of things as this is one thing ive never done before, my last engine builds have been done by tommy field (FMS) but at present i just cant afford to hand him a block and head and say ring me when its been dyno'd which is what i would ike to do

i wont be scrimping on parts but i want to try and build the engine up myself this time round, Im after around 450bhp as i dont want to be destroying gearbox's and diffs every 5 minutes which is typical of high power 4x4 cosworths,

main thing i need help with is cam choice as i dont have a clue what means what to be honest but want to learn the differances between bd10/14/16 etc,

the parts i have decided using so far just by reading other peoples specs etc and seeing whats best to start with are as follows -

200 block long studded (6)
4x4 head
standard rods shot peened
standard grind crank fully lightened and balanced/knife edged etc
low comp pistons but no idea what make so opinions needed please
2wd manifold with modded trouser section for external wastegate
gt3071
tial external 44m wastegate with 2.1 bar spring
hart racing plenum with 10mm spacer plate
4x4 throttle body
wrc breather set up
pro alloy rs 500 intercooler and motorsport rad

not sure on management yet but either pectel t2/t6 or life racing f88,

need info on cam choice for 450+ bhp and what injectors to use?

The car will be a sprint/hillclimb/track car so needs to be punchy out the corners with little lag as possible

all info and opinions welcomed.

And i know some of you will say ask your tuner etc but i dont like to waste their time with all these questions and a what spec to go unless im going to them for the work and when its ready to be done etc.

thanks Marc

speak to Tommy & buy the parts from him, that way he still gets something from it.
Everyone will have a different view but for what you want i would thinking alaong the lines of a ported head, bd16 inlet cam, standard exhaust cam, standard compression & 650-750cc injectors.

Marc,

Will you ever want more power later on?

It'd be a shame not to future proof yourself at this stage - i.e low comp pistons with cutouts etc.

You can build an engine to work perfectly well with the GT3071R for now, and if you want more power later, a turbo change and a remap will be all that's needed for another 100-150bhp

If it's only ever going to run at 450bhp - then the engine spec can be set much more finitely.

Well maybe at a later date yes and i was going to go for low comp pistons with valve cut outs anyway, i want it to be torque'y mainly,

yes buying the parts from tommy is one option but i am yet to sort out prices etc with him, but i want a rough idea as to what work is needed before i go down there so i know where to limit myself as tommy sometimes forgets i dont have the budgets of his other customers

Marc,

Personally for a 450bhp engine with the scope for 550bhp later on, I would go down the route of:

7.5:1 CR
Ported Head
BD15 Exhaust Cam
BD16 Inlet Cam
Newman Double Valve Springs
83lb Siemens Fuel Injectors
4x4 Inlet Manifold
14mm Spacer Plate

Later on, a swap up to a GT3076R should see you pick up another 100bhp with a remap

it depends on what you want from the car and what your going to use it for as well, the pectel T series is now very old and unsupported from the manufacturer, so if life racing is your only other option use that rather then the T series.

you can gain so much more technology into your build by speccing the right electronics, the antiquated on here will tell you 'its proven and does xyz' but building a cosworth fiesta is not exactly the old RS500 touring cars technology now is it lol !

bit of an old spec really that Will, yes it will do what you want, but for a better spec you can gain so much more driveability.

Admittedly it is a tried and tested spec Mark, however it drives so nicely! The 15 exhaust cam takes the edge off the nasty idle that can be caused by a 14. Pulls well from low revs, comes on strong and holds the power well on T4/GT30 engines

Anyway - i'll drop you a text soon if you still fancy having a play around with my AEM and the latest software

A basic spec engine will do it, standard comp and head with a BD 14 inlet a GT3071.
