id also say 106 gti is a good bet, although 205 gti 1.9s still go pretty well or the other option is the nova/corsa 2.0 16v redtop route

Saab 9000 Turbos and Volvo 850 T5s are cheap as chips and would have some good tuning potential I'd imagine...

i have had a 106 gti and it was fun and chuckable but fook me get real they won;t do what a 24 valve senator or carlton gsi will do,or a tatty boosted rs turbo or a volvo t5 or saab 9000 turbo,i have been in a saab 9k turbo doing over 160 and i wasn't driving i was praying it wouldn't do anything daft.
can you find mr2 turbos for a bag ??? they would murder a 106 gti they would and so would a impreza wrx or legacy rs twin turbo.

I bought a 2.0 XE Corsa for Ł550 and a 2.0 XE Nova for Ł700. Quite nippy but not 'quick'.

Id be tempted for a Renault 5 turbo, not sure it would last that long but would be fun. Otherwise Rover 220 Turbo.

Doubt you can get an MR2 turbo for under a grand.

I looked at several ones last year and even those for around 1500 - 2k were sheds. 2.5 - 3k buys you a nice one though.

Bmw,saab turbo or a T5 for that price range and straight line speed for me,I would be surprised to find a Calibra turbo for that money and GSI Carltons are a bit thin on the ground now I would of thought.Ooh I forgot about the fiat coupe, good call.
