850 T-5 would be my choice. I just sold mine for £1200, but you can pick them up for a few hundred quid. Fit the 850R turbo, can get a pikey rip-off remap for about £150, you could have 270bhp for a grand easy including buying the car.
Even as standard they're 225bhp, 300NM, handle ok for a big car and can get plenty of equipment. And the dog can come too

If you look arround you may get a subaru Legacy GT, don't think you will get a GTB at that price, but 280bhp is nice for that price.

obviously if you look at them traders on ebay who like to triple up you won't find one but subaru's don't do big money in the trade anymore unless somthing very special or uk spec and low owners low miles etc

A 944 Turbo for a grand? Yeah right!
Even with with mis-spelt decal on the wing isn't going to go for anywhere near that cheap!
Straight-line speed a MK3 Supra Turbo would take some beating.
I did once buy a 280bhp Impreza WRX Wagon for £750, which could have been made PERFECT with less than the £250 balance

If you actually mean fastest, as in top speed, then an Omega 3.0 is good for a true 150mph+. Youll get just about every extra you can think of and more, and also be left with a few hundred quid change.
I wouldnt have a mk3 supra given me. Nasty horrible cars, especially ones for under a grand.
And youll be hard pushed to find a calibra turbo for less than a grand too. The engines alone go that money, so finding a complete working car that will last for more than a few minutes, would be very hard.
A grand wouldnt buy you a nice 16v GTE either imo.
Bear in mind that if you have a limited budget (if you dont then obviously ignore this) and want a 'fast' car for less than a grand, then any one of them could let go at any time though. Just something to think about as it might be wiser in the long run to get a bit more cash together and buy a 'better' one.
Plenty of 'fast' cars for under a grand though, just depends what your criteria is, and whther you want a reliable one too.
Omega 3.0 gets my vote though as it does everything well on the whole, and you cant beat them for value for money in my opinion.

Paid a grand for my 850 T5 with a few tweeks done, remap, exhaust filter, unknown turbo. Tatty as fook, but drove well and gave nearly 320bhp on RR (280 ATW). Loads of equipment too and ultimate stealth. 14.0 1/4 mile @105. lol

i have had a 106 gti and it was fun and chuckable but fook me get real they won;t do what a 24 valve senator or carlton gsi will do,or a tatty boosted rs turbo or a volvo t5 or saab 9000 turbo,i have been in a saab 9k turbo doing over 160 and i wasn't driving i was praying it wouldn't do anything daft.
can you find mr2 turbos for a bag ??? they would murder a 106 gti they would and so would a impreza wrx or legacy rs twin turbo.

Tatty jap turbo power gets my vote for a bag of sand if all you wanna do is go fast.

Hard to beleive, i have a mate with one with cams and an exhaust and my mate with a standard Glanza turbo and ep3 type r beat him, 106 gtis?......hmmmm, but if type rs beat him......

How fast was it?
A Gtir won it, must have been the year before if that was last year. It only had 280bhp but could hit high 12 1/4s easily and probably good for 155+. I think the clutch started slipping on the day.

106 gti / 205 gti/ 309 gti / some hybrids clio valvers / suzuki swift gti / honda crx 16v / some civic's 16v's / the list is endless it all comes down to what you want out of your bag of sand

It wasnt a Reliant Robin it was a Reliant Kitten, the number of wheels being the giveaway and the GTir was bought for 900 quid iirc with only engine problems.
The problems were fixed for under 100 notes hence why it qualifiyed for the £1000 challenge and then won it.
The Reliant Kitten was indeed the following years challenge (2009 iirc), 2008 for the GTir
