Default PS3 / Blu Ray player question

If I were to download a blu-ray film and copy the file(s) onto the HDD of my PS3 would I be able to watch the blu-ray via the HDD?

If you download a BR Rip from the internet and find some way of transferring it to the PS3's HDD then it will play it. Bear in mind, that you can not play them from External HDDs or USB sticks and so forth as for external drives, the PS3 can not read any files about 4gb due to the FAT32 restrictions.

If the files are MKV, the best thing to do is just stream them straight from your PC using TVERSITY. Then you dont have to mess around transferring shed loads of files to the PS3.

So long as you can find a way to put the video onto the PS3, then yes. The PS3 supports most video formats.

I mean, if you can download films from the Playstation Store, why not from somewhere else?

The playstation store has now got blu ray films on it for rent or buy, the majority of these being about 6 gig in size so it will take some time, not to mention that's a fair chunk of hard drive space taken up.

There are other ways though

what you do is download them on to the pc, then have a program on the pc called ps3 server

as long as you have a router nd your pc and ps3 run off it alls you do is load the program and turn ps3 on, go into videos, search for your computer, media server and file where you saved that film and play the film by streaming from your pc in blu ray quality

Once your PS3 can see the media server, you can just copy files onto the PS3 so you don't have to leave the PC on. Depending on the format of what you are sharing, windows media player should let you do it ok, if not, then you may need to use winamp or another player.

I'd be surprised if you can stream a blu ray wirelessly without any glitches?

I have a 1tb NAS drive on my network (CAT6) so will run them via that.

Cheers guys
Chris

PS3's play MP4 movies, so theoreticallythere would be no need to burn to DVD. I see a lot of MKV files on torrent sites that are 20 odd gig in size

My brother has a 700gb external hard drive connected to his PS3 with a lot of movies on it and guess what?you can play all of them.. You just need to rename the folders correct just like you do with the psp otherwise the ps3 wont see them...But yeah if the blue ray movie is huge then i did read about a 4gb file limit...

it says in the insructions that external drive can be used for media, but not games or save data iirc.
