trouble is with all the snow an ice recently it has ruined the roads.. the council will just say we didn't know.. if it had a ring round it in paint then they do know but haven't repaired it so they are liable.. if its bad they should of got it done straight away or coned in off

I think it's because the water gets in all the cracks, and as water freezes, it expands and breaks up the weaker parts of the road surface. Then cars come along, dislodge the broken parts of the road, and hey presto, bastard pot hole.

i seen a bit on 5th gear that you need a few photos and it has to be at least 40mm deep to make a claim but claiming takes a long time because you have to do it all by letter

cant beleive how bad the roads have gotten!!! there was something on the tv saying that they have to be a certain depth for the council to pay out but cant remember what it was, also dont think there has to be a circle round it if someone has reported it and it hasnt been repaired within a certain amount of time then their liable!!

if you are a member of the aa etc you will need to have called them out to change the wheel over and to tell you if it is safe to use a different sized wheel to travel "normally" if not, you may be albe to get more out of the council if you are going to suffer difficulties in getting around
go and find the hole
note the exact location of the hole, position of lamposts, house numbers, distance from the kerb, road marking, etc
take plenty of pictures
try to use a newspaper to show the depth, length, width, etc if it is safe to do so, otherwise take pics of the hole from a safe distance, trying to show cars going past at a rate of knots
get more pics of the road in general to show what sort of speeds you can travel down, so if it's a 30 mph road show plenty of cars doing 30 mph etc down it rather than loads of cars stuck in loads of traffic![Wink](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)
take pics of the damage to your car
show a tread depth indicator type thing to show how new the tyres were
get a copy of the recipt
phone the council
ask to be put through to the insurance department
tell them what's happened
ask them to send you a claim form or to be put through to someone who will deal with the claim (assuming the road is part of their duristiction)
they will then tell you if they are responsible or if it is an outside contractor who's recently dug up the road you'd need to claim from
make sure you note exact times and dates and phone numbers you've dialed and who you spoke to in whatever department
call them every day until you get an answer
if they send you paperwork out, give it 3 days before you call to say "where is it?"
you can now email stuff across rather than spend time and money sending letters
make sure the letters yuo send explain everything, right down to the smallest detail, including the pupouse of your journey at the time you bashed the pothole and how it has required the changing of your plans
in my case i calle the aa who said that they could find nothing wrong other than the shock cover being disturbed, so the cuoncil said i had to get 2 different garages to find out what the probelm was before they agreed to ocver the cost, but it was done all within about 3 weeks, but others i've spoken to have accepted the general "not our fault" fobbing off from the councils they've talked to about pot hole damage

Can't cone off a pothole in the middle of the road, might cause some traffic flow 'problems'

further more, roads are inspected on a "need to inspect" basis
so the more used road can be inspected once every few weeks but those roads that aren't really used can remain unchecked for a year or more
the ones with rings around them simply mean that someonse going to get them fixed, not that they've just been reportd or that they are council aware ebcause osme may simply be contraced out to other companies in the first palce
