All im trying to say is that ford used the GTI badge when it is normaly associated with a vw, they should have come up with something better than that.
Escort GTI
0-60 9.2
top speed 122mph
bhp 115
Golf GTI
0-60 8.3
top speed 134 mph
bhp 150
Top Trumps Mate

As I have just said, it was a quick marketing job, not a full on development.... Not bad cars at all, and Gti has been on loads of cars, pugs, VW's etc... GT has been around decades, the i came about with fuel injection funnily enough!

The stats you're quoting are for a later car, when the Escort GTi was out of production.

The first incarnation of the 2.0 MK4 Golf GTi did 0-60 in 9.6. Couldn't tell you the top speed. They tweaked it over time because it was grossly underpowered for such a heavy, wallowy, boring car...

There should have been a poll on this thread.
My vote goes to the Probe... many said that it was Ford's attempts at replacing the Capri.... FAIL!

Yep!
The point I was trying to get across is this anyway...
Certain people seem to slate the Escort GTi for not being worthy of the GTi badge, when the fact of the matter is that performance-wise, they were as good as, or not much worse than the vast majority of other "hot hatches" available at the time...
Same goes for the MK5/6 RS2000. They were more than adequate. People are probably comparing them to Cosworths and such like, with supercar-slaying potential performance. But why? The MK1/2 RS2000's were never about that anyway. Yes, the MK1 and 2 are way cooler, and we'd all rather have them I'm sure, but for the early 1990's, the MK5 was right on the money.

I have the XR2i because I like it, if things had been different going back 8 years, I might have spent the money paid for it restoring a MK2 XR2... but things didn't work out that way and to be fair, for everyday use the Mk3 is better for its home comforts.
I owned a 2.0S Capri when I was 19 - no I wouldn't have a Probe, I will stick with my dad's advice on that one and believe him when he told me it was the worst car he had ever driven.

Ford have thrown some hideous, horrible, piles of shit on the road and then somehow managed to go to the other end of the scale, at the same time and produce some really nice ones.
I don't see the Cougar as one of those but definitely the MX-6 badged Probe.

Fast Ford snapper
Yes the Probe was just a Mazda with a silly name, any pre 90s Ford likes a good rot, and Mk5 Escort's wishbone's fall apart if you look at them... etc etc...
But for all the downfalls of the older stuff I think that pales into insignificance when you look at the modern breed of half arsed people carriers. For example the Ford Fusion in all it's extra headroomed nanny-state blandness....
Yuk

I think of the fusion a bit like my work's berlingo. Its less of a car and more of a tool, to get you, your family and a boot full of shite about with the minumum of fuss, its just basic transportation. Some are very basic, someone I know has a 53 plate fusion, its got windey windows and a tape player! I think they fit the bill perfect for someone who needs a car like this, but if you want style or lots of trick bits and buttons, get something else!
