From a pure drivers perspective:

Impreza's are popular becuase they are consistent to drive in the dry or wet, on track, or road.
They may not have the best handling, but grip is where they do excel.

Fwd/Rwd will excel in dry and grippy conditions as they have less drivetrain drag.

I think Impreza's have had the iconic status that was previously held by the Cosworth and the Starion Turbo and Montego Turbo before it. All of them affordable saloons with supercar performance potential.

The question is what will come along to replace it? Its long overdue!! The EVO has not managed it, due to low sale volumes, and neither did the Focus RS, for the same reasons.

RS Turbo
Montego Turbo
Starion Turbo
Sierra RS Cosworth
Escort RS Cosworth
Subaru Impreza Turbo
next????

i ve owned my focus rs now for 3 years, got two kids 1 and 7, had it along side loads of other cars including 5 saff cossys 3 rs turbos, bmws, m3 and loads of other cars and ive never once thought about selling it until i went out in the mk2 a couple of months ago, but after driving one ive decided i dont like it 20k more than the mk 1. its been a really good car and useable every day. They are slow as standard but a remap and decat transforms them, the running costs are good and it always keeps me entertained. a few of my mates have had subarus including a uk 300, and ive never considered moveing over even though it would free up a load of cash and be more practicle

I think Ginge's Scoob looks quite smart and I'm far from being a Scooby fanboy.

Only scoob I'd own is the 22B, and they're a tad more than a FRS
Wouldn't want a wank uk spec, or even a jap spec, all I ever see is fat old balding men driving them, or young(ish) ugly blokes, on their own

An Escort Cosworth is inferior to an Impreza in pretty much every way, standard like for like.

Also, Subaru has a name for reliability. The only people who have problems are idiots who either don't maintain them properly, abuse them, or have them 'tuned' by someone who doesn't know their arse from their elbow. I had a 10 year old one a few years ago, and I could drive it hundreds and hundreds of miles, safe in the knowledge that it would never let me down.

The 22bs are overpriced in my opinion. More of a collectors item now, hence the price tag... much like an Escort Cosworth. Same with P1s; there is no reason for the premium above a Type R other than what it is.

Imprezas are great cars for the money, hence why they are everywhere. You can say they are all driven by chavs etc, but remember that someone had to buy all these cars new in the first place for them to be around. That was mostly young professionals in my opinion, judging by the members on various Subaru forums who are still around from the late nineties/early 00s.

So much misinformation, or lack of it in this thread.

Cleverest affordable cars on the market? Just think about what you're saying. I love Evos, but 1) They cost more than an Impreza to buy in the first place due to lower sales. 2) Parts cost more as a result of this. 3) Insurance costs more.

All that adds up to a large premium over Subaru ownership, which isn't really a huge amount different when it comes to the driving experience. They both have pros and cons in that respect.
