Default Mk1 frs or Subaru Impreza

Ever since the MK1 focus RS came out I've always liked them and think styling wise Ford got it spot on. Currently I own a MY00 Impreza which is pretty much standard and to be honest I really enjoy owning/driving. Of late I've been thinking about getting a FRS. Now if I was to sell my Scooby which has 60000 on the clock and in good condition I'd be lucky to get 4k for. The focus's I've been looking at with lowish mileage (40k and under) seem to be about 10 k ish. What I would like to hear is opinions from people who have owned both. Is the focus worth 6k more than the Subaru? The Road surfaces where i live are more like those in Bosnia than the uk i.e shite. So I can't see the focus being capable of having the same amount of grip as the Subaru?.How do the running costs compare? I'm a ford boy at heart, and miss the RS scene. I have two children ages 4 and 3 months so obviously the scooby is more practical, but to be honest that doesn't affect my choice. Cheers for any advice/comments

Love to Focus RS, driven a few and they never fail to make me grin. Mate of mine ran one as a daily driver and test bed for his business with no bad words to be said.

Saying that though even not being a big Subaru I can't help but think the old Impreza is a better choice for you. The crap residuals mean bargains a plenty to be had.

You have answered your own question mate, Subaru's ten a penny and not worth s**t as the market is full of them plus if you have 2 young children you will not be driving fast enough to even worry about road holding

Focus all day

I'm pretty sure the FRS will keep up or even outpace a scooby round a track...they handle really well!

The scooby's good because it's practical, reliable and won't surprise you, unlike the RS.
In my opinion the RS isnt worth the extra 6 k over the scoob.

p.s. Ginge is wrong, regardless of the subject.

I'd put a few hundred or so into the Impreza to make it tip-top, then if not already done, boost power to around 270-280bhp along with a couple of small handling improvements then just use it and use it for years to come... happy in the knowledge that it ticks a lot of boxes for pretty small outlay.

Cheers,
Grant

reality check mate, the impreza is a great car to drive mate, they can have some handling mods for not alot of cash,,,, and it is a very very fun car to drive,,,,, so the only subject id be wrong on is how good a ride your mum is

Have to agree with that.I own a scoob and have two kids and the car does all it needs to,practical looks good(imo)and goes well,i would love a frs but i can imagine it being worth 6k more for what you get.
But having said that do what makes you happy mate lifes too short n all that.

It may well beat it around the track, but what about on real world roads. Derbyshire county councils idea of re-surfacing a road is to put 2 mm of tar down, dump 40mm of chippings on top of the tar, run a road sweeper over it once. And jobs a good one.

There's love for something and being blinkered towards only one thing... its like saying that for 14k, you'd rather buy an Escort Cosworth for a daily drive/part-time track car than an Impreza STi or Mitsi EVO which would do the job far better and without the need for constant cash injections for upgrades/repairs which would inevitably come along with the Ford.

lol @ a 1999/2000 UK Impreza Turbo being a fashion accessory in (almost) 2010!!

Money no object, I'd agree with you... but the OP asked if the FRS was going to be worth the Ł6,000 extra needed for him to go from the Impreza to the Focus, which I don't think it would be given his list of requirements.

firstly i would have the escort cosworth, secondly were not talkin bout evos which funny enough is the only jap car i think is worth owning an as for reliablity with scoobys, they r just as bad as anythin with an rs badge, pistons made of chocolate an to top it off i could look out my window for half hour an see at least ten scoobies past an 1 frs MAYBE, an a cosworth once in a blue moon so yes imo the frs is 6k more car, if he wants a cheap fast popular car get a mondeo st200

...the age old Subaru reliability bollox? The EsCos for a Daily/Occasional Track Car? The Mondeo ST200 as an alternative to an Impreza Turbo?!

I never mentioned the FRS being unreliable buddy. I did however say that an EsCos would require far more money being spent on routine maintenance and upgrades to fulfil the same purpose (to the same level) that a very lightly tweaked Impreza or Evo would take almost in its stride... and I think I love Escort Cosworths more than you, since if I had one, then it would be kept in garage as a weekend toy and never driven as a daily driver!!

I like the ST220, but the +400quid a year tax thats about to hit them puts them right off the mark for the 'reasonable' performance they offer IMO.... so would only ever consider an ST TDCi in that shape/age Mondeo, but then thats another lump of cash more than the equivalent age/mileage ST220 would cost.

i do get wot your saying especially with the evo as they r greaat and im not saying they wont do the job just as well but its the feelin u get when driving that only a ford can bring, the escos is my second fav car of all time only second to the rs200, the only reason i dont own one is coz i cant afford to look after 1 as deserved but same goes the evo,

fun factor till you get sick of tipping the seats forward to get the kids in and out every day. i would stick with a 4 door while the kids are at home mate.
focus has a lot harder suspension than the scoob, tyres, brakes, consumables are a lot dearer too. they do torque steer no matter what people say,and the bumpy roads that are the norm round here make it 10 times worse.
yes the rs is nice and i would probably take one over my m3 if i could, but i have driven quite a few and don't know if i could live with one everyday or trust the misses in it.

Its usually only the weekend that the kids go out in the scooby, so not too bigger issue

No doubt they are better looking and a lot rarer than the Subaru. But my original question was, in the real world on damp, crap road surfaces (which for 330 days a year they are lol) how do the two compare, is the focus really worth 6k more and only 3 years newer? It may sound like I've already answered my own question, but I would just like to hear peoples opinions who have owned the two. My head says stick with what I have, The rest says get the RS. your hear for a good time not a long time

mate have you driven a impreza,,,, and i dont mean a wanky uk spec car but a actual STI impreza ???

ive had mine for,,,, well almost 2 years, been to the ring with it twice and used it as a daily driver and also spanked the arse off it on the motorway,,,, ive held it at between 130 to 150mph alot and the engine is fine,,, the gearbox has gone in it now but ive done around 25k miles in it and the repair bill has been brake pads, services, tyres and 1 radiator

it handles the fucking nuts but then again i have done alot to the suspension i guess

the only downside to a impreza is the fuel bill and the insurance on a STI import

if you wanna compare my impreza to a V6 mondeo PLEASE,,, honestly be real

they are ugly cars though BUT they do sometimes look good for some reason

tell me that dont look good ?

missis has a wrx classic import. Standard turbo, standard injectors, standard engine and does 12s all day long is a pleasure to drive and cheap as chips and car cost less than 2.5k, nothing compares

it handles the fucking nuts but then again i have done alot to the suspension i guess

the only downside to a impreza is the fuel bill and the insurance on a STI import

if you wanna compare my impreza to a V6 mondeo PLEASE,,, honestly be real

they are ugly cars though BUT they do sometimes look good for some reason

yes mate i have driven quite a few imprezas an ive never said they r slow or handle bad ive just said i dont like em an if u read further on in the thread i said maybe st200 was a wrong choice of example but i also said the st220 wasnt an yes it is a better car an the rs focus is better than the 220 so yeah i can honestly compare
