Default Who knows the ins and outs of Sky HD?

Evening folks

Just ordered Sky HD, to be installed on 23rd December, with their 20mb broadband and phone line.

What I was wondering is, how does the storage part of it work?
Is it a Linux based O/S and can I SSH/FTP into it?
Also can it be connected to a LAN so I can access the share to move recorded programs around?

Any cool things you can do with it? Already know about the ITV HD manual channel add [cheers Tiff]

Cheers in advance

if you record hd stuff, it can take upto 4 times the space
if you record just normal stuff you get twice the storage capacity of normaly sky+

so you can get upto 80 hours or as little as 20 hours

LOL

Its just a way to get to the "guts" of a device and view the internal filestructure, get to the HD content in this case..

I'll do some reading, but thought someone on here would have already violated it

What package did you go for mate and how much are you paying a month? Looking into changing to Sky next month but weighing the costs up!

i went for the basic hd with another set of channels (food channels for the missus +Ł1) 20mb broadband and a phone line

Already had a phone line, but worked out a lot cheaper to have everything swapped..

Bill will be Ł50 a month, and cost me around Ł115 for all the installation, but I get Ł50 M&S vouchers for the hassle...

Deal clincher for me was that virgin have only around 6 hd channels, went round my mates last night and the upscaling of normal channels is V good....

relativly easy to get to the HDD but actually doing anything with the files is impossible as its all encyptred, it is possible to gain more storage space by turning off the anytime TV feature

Can always rig it up to a recordable DVD player and copy your recordings onto a disc...

Do you or can you actually regain this space JUST by turning off anytime tv, thought it was still reserved space, didnt see my free space in my planner go up when turning mine off ?

You can copy the recordings to a pc with a program "copy +" I think its called, but cant do anything with them only store or transfer them to a different drive, pc dont know what to do with them and are encoded, and need the card to watch them, even if you cancell your subscription to a channel you have recordings of you will not be able to view them on the sky box .

Any more input on the subject appreciated as always good to get something extra lol, so on that note how do you get the ITV HD .

OK now added ITV HD, easy enough lol, Google was my friend .

When i turned off the anytime tv i didnt get any more space, as far as i thought it is still reserved and wastes space if you turn the anytime off. Not 100% sure tho

Content awful on ITVHD

they do occasionally have big footy games on ther though. and ITV's standard picture for footy is soooooooooo poor so its nice to use it.

As for outputs, I use optical. we will look to see if there are any others.
