If it was me I would be going for a 106 gti, very good car and handle very well.
Loved mine, just a little small. Mine left 306 gti-6 for fun.
Obviously it was modded. My old 106 gti

306 gti6, good car and goes really will round the twisty stuff, my mates eats clio sports and it only induction and exhaust ed. Very good on fuel too, and pocket some cash and and have some to treat the car.

Clio for me too. My mate got his wife one a few years back and it was a lot of fun and kept pace with quite a lot of so called quicker cars. Certainly annoyed his fellow Scooby owners at one of their meets when they coulldn't shake it.

I'v only ever drive my mate on the drive, but as a passenger, its fast, never been in a car the can hold some stupid speeds thought the bends his is now sightly mod chassis whise, lowered 30mm avo dampers and stiffer rear mounts.
I shouldn't really be saying this as if i finds out il never hear then end of it.
But its a good car, drives hes car hard, most of the time. Bloody good on fuel considering he drive hard. And this is something its got over the 106, I've send a stripped 306gti get run over by a bulldoze to crush it up, and it took quite some doing, compared to a saxo I see get crushed to and that a 106 at the end of the day.

You would easily pick up a typr R for 5k and have plenty to choose from.
Up sides to the typre R are:
Pretty quick
still look good
great seats
brilliant gear position
bullet proof
very practical with large cabin, big boot
Down sides:
dash is a little dated
firsty
limited extra's
have to drive it hard to get the most of it, odd at first but you get used to it.
The clios look good, dare say you would get one with lower miles than a type r but for me they don't have the all round package offered by the type r, but a good pocket rocket non the less.
Me, i would be getting a type r, had mine for nearly 2 years and really found it difficult to let it go.

306 gti's have the worst turning circle in the world due to thier gearbox position. Mental through first and 2nd after that it's pretty lame. You can easily get 70 out of 2nd gear and about 90 out of 3rd then you have 3 more gears to get to the indicated 140 which is where it struggles. Low 15's at the pod. The Clio's and the Civic Type R's easily get done by 200+ RS Turbo's, depends on what you like, and what you want to use it for. Any car can break after lots of abuse.
