Default struggling to get to grips with 4wd

hi all, i posted the other day about my 360dg spin in the evo but it was in the rain, now today roads were dry and at around 80mph i just tabbed the brakes maybe just a tad to hard and it was on a very slight right hand bend and the back end stepped out again!! i was ok tho just come off the throttle for a second and she was in a straight line again, ive got toyo T1R,s on the front and ive got yokohama DNA GRAND PRIX on the back but the back tyres are nearly at the end of there life so will be putting some TR1,S on.
there still on standard 16in rims and will put 17in on when i can afford , i realise that it is me that has to learn more about driving 4wd and AYC (active yaw control)
ive also looked into the tyre pressures and peeps are saying 30 in the front and 28 in the rear

thanks
andy

maybe the tracking or a brakes issue, as i know you said it was exiting a roundabout so im pressuming you braked before it, so maybe a back brake sticking on

only guessing though

but i realy dont think it should be behaving like your saying it does

Dont think the ayc will do much for lift off oversteer, youve got to be on the power for that to work. Try scrubbing the speed off before you enter the corner and try not to be on and off the throttle mid bend as it'll upset the balance.

Tyres must be the same all round on with 4x4!

My cossie used to step out sharply in damp/wet conditions and it was caused by crap tyres worn out ditch finder suspension.

remember being 4wd you can have understeer, power oversteer, lift off oversteer, the whole lot

But as said, if the car seems out of control get it checked.

Most 4wd cars are tame, understeer can be fixed with oversteer and 4 wheel drifts, lift off oversteer can correct into a night bit of gentle power oversteering rather than snapping back straight hard etc etc

theres the problem, you shouldnt brake mid corner, all speed needs to be scrubbed off before entering a corner, brake mid corner it upsets the balance and things get loose imho

That's true, but on the road at times(although you maybe shouldn't be doing it anyway), you need to slightly change your line to accommodate cars coming the other way etc. You should still be able to do that and have control with feel. If the car is unpredictable then there must be something wrong somewhere... or maybe the OP just isn't used to 4wd yet.

AYC is a pain to get used to apperantly, I knew a guy with a Evo 5 and he kept spinning out in the wet or dry, If you keep on the power it'll correct itself and be fine providing you know what your doing.

Never driven with AYC, so only going on what he said. Braking mid corner is a big no no, even in a 38bhp Mini

you say your back tires are on the limit? get them replaced then see if its the same.

got three barely legal tyres on the impreza and lately (with all the rain) the arse end has been coming out at almost every rounabout, suprising how much difference they can make, never noticed till now.

worn out rear tyres and braking mid corner is the problem,,,, nothing to do with the amount of driven wheels,,,,,,, the problem seems to come from between the seat and the steering wheel IMO

ive got 4wd and ive only ever span the car/had issues due to my shite driving, worn tyres make a HUGE difference to a car aswell

Tyres should be all same size too, If you haven't, get your car 4 wheel aligned etc to make sure you get even wear on tyres.

Only when off throttle.......which imo would suggest the balance of an standard evo(5/6) is not quite as good and an old scoob(the evo lot will hang me for that, lol). Youve got to get used to keeping on the power though for any 4x4 to work though. Instinct makes you jump off the throttle when it gets a bit lairy. If you cant learn to keep you foot in then the next best thing is when you lift off to hammer the clutch in asap to help balance the car, then when its back in line set it away again. This is slow on track but for general purpose is fine and could well keep you out the ditches, lol.

Get a 4 wheel alignment done ASAP. The problems you describe sound like an alignment issue!

Too tired (there's a pun there, boom boom) to read all replies, but I reckon it's your mismatch tyres.

I'd be 95% sure of it in fact.

Change them to all the same size, tread depth and make and model.

T1Rs are very different to T1S, bin them all off and start again IMHO.
Yep it costs lots, but to offset it, sell them on to some other mug who doesn't care enough about his handling, job done!

agree with you 100%, i would never fit them yoko's again on my car thay are shit.

rear tyres are nearly at their end of life and you go in to a 360 spin in the rain, then you say it does it at 80 mph in the dry and you didnt do any damage ?????

i dont beleave any of this and what speed was you doing in the rain then with them tyres being low, dont get me wrong we all speed but with low tread depth i wouldnt dream of putting my foot down..

also you should have all the same tyres with the same tread depth on a 4x4 it makes a big diffrence
