depends what you want Dave, how many hdmi outputs/inputs etc etc....

I have a denon one, can't remember the model off hand though, personally I would be looking from one of the following makers
Denon
Yamaha
Onkyo
Sony

Do your research on the net first to make sure the one you have choosen stacks up and there aren't any better ones on offer from the other makers

my onkyo has just gone in for repair (2 years old now) but even so I still recommend them, great piece of kit, they do run warm though so make sure its got room to breathe.

it all depends on what you want from it and how soon you would want to renew it if you are a "geek"

when i was lokig for an amp i settled on a cambridge audio one as it had, for my budget, the most amount of optical inputs, thus removing teh need for wires to be trailing all ove the shop

with most equipment now having an optical output, i'd be looking for a unit that had at least 6 inputs, tv, sky, dvd recorder, ps3, xbox360 plus an extra one for "just in case"

then you have to think about the speaker side of things, do yuo want to buy stand alones or have something come with the set up?

and last, but by no means least, they now come with hdmi inputs so you can do stuff with that too, but you will need a geek (or thrush) to explain what all that is about as i don't have the foggiest

7.1 is about standard now so you might need to budget for 7 speakers as well as a stand alone sub

How many speakers do you have and what sort of power per channel do you want? Is your sub active or passive? One of my suppliers is running special prices at the moment on the following that are in your price range:

Denon AVR2808 7x110WPC (slightly over budget)
Harman Kardon AVR445 7x65WPC
Harman Kardon AVR645 7x75WPC (slightly over budget)
Harman Kardon DPR1005 7x70WPC (well below budget - refurbed)
Panasonic SAXR70 6x100WPC (well below budget)
Yamaha DSPAX863SEBL 7x105WPC (well below budget)
Yamaha RXV1900BL 7x130WPC with HDD (over budget)

Let me know if you want prices

I got an Onkyo too as they're great performers for the budget.

Speakers for TV/DVD, everyone seems to go nuts for the KEF eggs but they lack the depth imo for music as well.

I got mine quite a few years ago and plumped for Acoustic Energy [not the shitty Acoustic Solutions you get from Richer Sounds]. 2 x 120 floorstanders, 2 x 100 rears [on Soundstyle Z2s] and a 107 centre speaker. I don't know if they still make them but their website still lists the 100 series HERE.

What makes the big difference for watching movies is a sub. I only got a fairly cheap one [Mordaunt Short Alumni 9] but it makes the experience much better

i second that

http://www.mordauntshort.com/summary...Title=Alumni+9

it absolutly thumps on half volume and the amp on about 25%

going any higher annoys the neighbours and makes our ears hurt

B&w 600 series speakers and sub. I have a set and Cambridge audio amp, not cheap but quality. To be honest if you want quality sound for tv and audio I'd get the best two channel set up and decent speakers/ sub you can afford and a dac if you want high quality from digital music sources

Onkyo here too, very good for the money and have lots of HDMI inputs.

currently run the Kef 1005.1 speakers and sub setup, which is ok for TV and Films but could do with a bit more depth for music, so in the near future i will be adding some floor standing front speakers and a new centre and go 7.1

Ive got Infinity Surround speakers x4 and a centre speaker and Sub i paid about 700 for them years ago which are good for everything, Especially music!

I bought a yamaha amp RX-V44ORDS was about Ł300 when i bought it... Sounds awesome and has been fine but Speaker Channel A is broke as nothing comes out anymore.

Also its all using RCA leads which is a bit annoying.

Im thinking of upgrading the Surround Amp and getting rid of the Yamaha DVD player as its fooked anyway.

What would you guys suggest. I can probably go upto Ł400

Do you do HDMI connections these days?

I have 52 inch Sharp Aquos 1080P telly.
