chain is safer and everything can be contained internally
the belts tend to be always on the outside

Hard question to answer, they all used to be chain, then started going belt, but some are reverting back, and some have stayed chain anyway, personally I'd rather have belt, as easier to do than a new chain when they rattle like fook.

Adv of belts
Quite running, low inertia, low power loss
Dis adv of belts
must be kept dry and oil free, service required, limited load capacity
Adv of chains
Strong, long life, low service requirement
Dis adv of chains
require complex tensioner as they stretch, noisy, inefficient
Hope that helps!

Last year I would have said chains, but this year both mine and my wifes car needed new engines due to timing chain failure. My new car has a belt
