Default The Lotus carlton..

Right gents,
I'm getting a bit fed up with FWD,especially turboed.
I've been looking at a Lotus omega for sale at a dealers near me
The only thing that worries me are spares,or lack of them.
Has anyone got any experiance with these cars?,worth buying?.
I'm not worried about fuel cons. as it'll only be rarely used.
I also heard that the gearbox can explode?.
Comments thanks.

Remember an omega will be lhd, problems with head gaskets, gear boxes, turbo,s and no were near as cheap to fix as a cossie, drove a few ,when they were nearly new,and what an awsome car,

you best have deep pockets, parts are expensive esp tyres, brake pads, used to know a guy who owned one and brake pads cost him Ł200, tyres Ł250 each, headgaskets do go and arent cheap to fix, the shells themselves are still prone to rot so check all round the rear arches/valance

but saying all that they are cool cars and they do go well

i never heard about the gearboxes exploding but there pretty similar to the 3dr cosworths when it comes to spares and theres a large vhauxhall scene. but would u not be better spending the Ł20,000 odd on a decent cossy?

Omega are LHD as for other markets, UK ones were badges as Carlton.
Same gearbox as vette, ie massively stronger than cossie 2wd I'm sure they are 40mph/1000rpm in top gear like the vette of the time.
Parts are no problem, although pricey for some bits.
Can be made a LOT faster as well.

the old chap had them years back now, had 6 of them all together, he loved em you might notice

i dont remember them much but he said the lack of parts was the only reason he didnt keep his last one, and the clutch is really heavy apparently not nice for in traffic

something like that,
but otherwise a stuipidly cool car, i love the look of them

well they are ace cars and ive always had a major soft spot for em. I have ALL the brochures and sales literature on them totalling around Ł1500 in value if i was to sell including a manual in leather which was supplied for new buyers.

The parts are rare tbh and if you do get hold of a part it will cost you loads.

Over the years and me reading WELL into the LC car, i made contact with a great guy who i have known now for a god few years-Charles Waddington.

What he doesnt know about LC isnt worth thinking about. PLEASE speak to this guy before buying one as he has the lowdonw on them all. He has a website here

http://www.lotus-carlton.co.uk/

Lots of information there but well worth spending a few hours reading up etc

it's the bellhousing that cracks and you can't get replacements which sort of writes the car off unless you can get it fixed with one of them dowling kits that were an option

properly monsterous motors though, but they are big heafty things, not light and nimble, and only recently have the M5, E-amg brigade caught up with the performance
