One for the IT people....
At home I have a Linksys Wireless-N ADLS2 router etc etc... all good connecting through O2 (my ISP), never had probs etc.... On my home network I have one desktop machine (ip is 192.168.1.101) running Vista Home Premium, one laptop (192.168.1.102) running XP Home, a 1tb disc connected and a CCTV DVR (IP of this is 192.168.1.90).
What i'm trying to achieve is to be able to connect to my DVR via the internet.
I started by installing Win VNC on both PC's and they are successfully talking to each other and i can operate the desktops remotely (internally on the network). I have followed the instructions to connect via the internet by opening a port up (5900 is default for VNC). I've run a test from a webpage (http://www.gotomyvnc.com/) and it is saying its successfully open.
However, for the DVR as it is not windows based I cannot use VNC, I am presuming I have to connect via a web browser and open up another port on the router. I have opened up port 1111 on the router to point directly to the DVR's IP address of 192.168.1.90 but when I am trying to connect externally (from iphone or from my desktop PC - out to the net and back in again) it fails to connect. I am putting http://*my external IP*:1111 . Is this correct or am I doing something wrong here? Will my internal PC (192.168.1.101) be able to go out to the internet and back in via this port or will it fail anyway? Best test I imagine will be from someone elses house to see!!
Any help would be great!!
Cheers
Chris

You need to know what the port is that the DVR is communicating on - you cant just port redirect a random port in the hope it will talk to it as it wont - theres 65535 tcp ports so it would take you ages to find the right one - look in the documentation!

Cheers for that Lee, i've checked the docs and it doesnt specify a specific port to use. However port 80 (http port) is set to default on the DVR?? Kind of lost now what to do!!
If you google Lilin PDR 400IP the manual/software is there. It does use a small app called IPScan.exe which basically is a gui for configuring the access I think. On there it is prompting me for a PPPOE username and password but I dont connect to my ISP this way, i use RFC1483 Bridged (ADSL2) so doesnt require the login details?
HELP!!!

A web browser is on port 80, why not set up one of you desktops as a web server and see if you can connect externaly as a test. Then you can be 100% sure your router is happy to route externaly.
But it could use surcure ie HTTPS which is on another port.

Alternatively with regards to a web server how would I go about this? My PC is Vista Home Premium so is more limited than Vista Bus / Ultimate. (no remote desktop either )

that ccna stuff gone now is it?..
remember PAT and NAT?
you need to setup a port on pc a for example, vnc to use port 5678 and then on your router use the port forwarder to direct port 5678 to the ip of pc a
you need a seperate port for each pc
just the same you need to setup a port on the dvr ( on you internet network first) i'd not use the common ports use a randon one, then setup a port forwarder on the router again
also add the ports on the firewall of each of the pcs, for the port that you allocated for them
ALSO remember to make sure you allow the ports through the firewall on the router

Thats the next step mate with that VNC software. Off to mum and dads later, will install VNC on their PC and try and connect to this one via port 5900 (vnc port), if this works do I presume that I can use any port for the DVR so long as I specify it on the DVR config itself.

I've done exactly as you've said regarding the ports, the DVR doesnt require a specific one so have configured a random one to point to the IP Address of the DVR. I'll shoot over to mums to test now!
