Default Finding the right oil ?

Just changed the oil in me cossie and it sounds like a a fecking TANK not sure what was in it before as ive only had it a few weeks but it was perfect no tappeting AT ALL!
Goes to halford buys a 4L and a 1L bottle of Mobile 1 15w-50w, then to fords for a new filter. Changed oil started it up and after a few minutes the tappets start to sing!
So i thought it'll be alrite after a while............................................. .......
but its still tapping??

Wrong oil or what???

James.

Mobil 1 is VERY thin these days, you need Mobil 1 "Motorsport" Its in a similar bottle just to add to the confusion

Thats the thing who do you listen to on advice about oil?? Fords recommend 0w-40w! Trial and error could work out very expensive

Fords recommend 0w-40w
Ford (as in vehicle handbook), or your local dealership? 0w-40w is not the correct grade for a Cossie engine (unless it's been rebuilt and that's what the engine builder advises)

15/50 is fine for a standard Sapphire Cosworth. I used Carlube triple R 15/50 in mine.

If it was too thick - then I'd expect the tappets to rattle on start up and go quiet after a while.

You HAVE re-checked the oil level haven't you

Maybe (as it's a car you just bought) there was some additives in the old oil to quieten it? Wynns do one specifically for noisey hydraulic tappets.

TBH I have used 10/40,15/50 and 10/60 and they all sounded exactly the same , the only difference was oil pressure.

I used 10/60 in the end , that was in there for 15k miles with no probs
