2.0 306 hdi rattle till 3000rpm then clears........
Just bought a cheap 1999 306 hdi for work, nice little car but on hard acceleration theres a loud rattle sounds similar to surge.
After googlin it theres seems to be mixed opinions on the cause, some say crankshaft pully others say injectors etc just seems weird that it clears at around 3000rpm
Has anyone experienced similar?? Just want to try and make sure its reliable cus i do 500 miles a week but dont wanna spend a fortune replacin things that dont need to be.
Cheers

its a rubber damped pulley, thw rubber in the middle perishes and makes the 2 halfs rattle, very common on all HDi engines.
isnt a must do straight away but do it soon as possible as it will only get worse, oh and use genuine parts as pattern ones are crap! had a pattern part on the ex's 206 and it went 18months later again so was false economy to save a little in short term only to have to do it again so soon.

hiya guys i am a peugeot technician the pulley is a very common fault on them just to be 100% certain it is that if you put the car in full right hand lock and remove the little arch liner behind the wheel you will visibly be able to see the pulley rotating on the piss also if you do require one i could get one for you at trade if you would like and post it

I've got a rattle on the mrs 206 1.4 HDI could that be the same problem?? have removed the alternator drive belt and there is no noise?? changed the tensioner as we thought it was that cos we could see it bouncing as you looked at it but noise is still there!(If you dont start the car up for a few days the noise is well loud till it warms up a bit!

Nice one mate. Just out of interest is it just the speed the pully is turning at 3k that makes the noise go away?

hiya mate yea the pulley is a piece of p**s to do. first of you will need a 13mm spanner to release tension from the auxilary belt but make sure you note down or draw a diagram of the route of the belt then just whip the bolt out of the pulley 22mm i think and the pulley will come off. when refitting the new pulley make sure the locating cut out on the pulley lines up with the key on the crank the tighten the pulley up and refit the belt and jobs a good un mate 1 thing i will add is you would probably be best off with an impact air gun as the pulley take alot to crack off anything else i can help you with just drop me a pm or reply 2 this post cheers
