Ive had problems with my mcl on the right knee and acl on the left, lol. Also torn my peroneal tendon which i was off my feet for 2 weeks, hobling round for 4-6 weeks after that. Full recovery......well thats not happened and the injury was in 2004, its something i have to live with know.
I'm not a fan of the docs and there extreme vagueness, usually end up having to go see a physio.....which can be bloody expensive.
How damamged is it? Pain, swelling, bruising and how did the injury occur?
With ligaments and tendons the healing process is generally slow due to poor blood supply and if you not careful its easy to progress from a mild tear to a complete rupture. As for recovery.....same as all injuries really, rest, ice(2-3 times a day) and if you can apply some form of compression to the area, aswell as support it'll hold better heat which can aid healing.
Whatever you do stay clear of and steroid injections.

i had a motorbike accident 8 weeks ago smashed my femur into 3 bits and my knee was like a balloon.
the docs arent really concered about the knee until the leg heals (which it hasnt yet)
just concerened that it will be weak forever now and will be prone to giving way?

Once the leg has healed properly you will be able to asses the extent of the remaining damage(if any) to the knee. Good thing is the break forces you to give the knee time to heal also. Once your sorted i'd imagine you'd go through some physio which will aim to strenghten the muscle in the leg and around the knee in order for you to go back to......normal activity or as close to as possible.
Basicly you'll just have to wait it out until you can test it.

I have torn both of mine(1 in each knee), also have laxity of ligaments, hyper mobility hyper extension and genu recurvatum in both knees, meaning they bend not only in the normal way but also forwards and sideways too.
This happened along with a 19 month hospital stay, first 3 months in a coma on ventilator etc, both femurs, cominuted left tib and fib comminuted, right elbow, humerus, both clavicles, 3 ribs, sternum two areas of brain damamge, with lump of brain missing(dead) and hole in top of brain with irregular left ventricle.
What do you need to know ?

It will limit the stability of your knee, try to do some leg weight lifting, but don't go overboard on weight.
As it's just the 1 you will be fine, but you'll fall over easier when pissed, so get it on youtube!!

I damaged mine quite badly 6 years ago in a motorbike accident, i had NHS physio for about 3 months and it was rubbish, I started seeing my physio privately and within about 12 months I was back at the gym and playing football again. I see the physio every other month now and that is just for sports massage. The only problem I get is when it is very cold and I am doing sport it swells and can become very painful so I just wear sports tights which solved the problem.

Yup - tore my MCL and broke my ankle after flying my kite two years ago. 6 months of physio and it still isn't right - always had a weak knee but it now goes sometimes at odd moments - it went a few months ago when digging the garden - it bends left to right instead of backwards. I just have to concentrate to to bend the knee normally and avoid twisting movements. Doesn't affect my job though - I'm a computer programmer.
Haven't flown my kites in two years though :-(

i've fucked both my knees and the damage, although possibly not the ligament in question, means that anything other than straight line stuff tends to give me lots of pain
even simple things like pushing the trolley around the supermarket is difficult as it puts extra strain on the joints
let the leg heal up first, then you will be able to see just how bad any damage is to the knee joint
you may find that you won't be able to flex it as much as the ligamanets tend to have a habit of being funny if they've been over stretched, for example, i hyper extended my left knee in a car accident and even now, when i press the lutch too often it tends to lossen up to the extent that it will either lock in the fully extended position or lock in the flexed position whre the tendons and ligaments have said "enough!" and hooked over something they shouldn't hook over
all this means is that 've got to get out and start waggling my leg about as if i've pissed myself to get it untangled
i also bought a very nice (expensive) knee brace, 2 straps ont he top, 1 strap at the bottom, so that my knee would still flex but the rotational angles wold be kept in check which helped a HUGE ammount
don't think of it as all doom and gloom though, you might walk with a limp which will affect you more than having a dodgy knee or it may all be fine and you were worried about nothign

I had a motorbike accident about 4 years and ended up damaging my ACL and kneecap in my left knee after falling off, landing heavily on a rock and twisting
It badly. A couple of mates helped me up but as soon as I put any weight on it, it just collapsed and I fell to the floor.
After hobbling to my car (took a while! LOL!), I just about drove myself to A&E (because nobody would take me. Cheers boys.), they diagnosed me with a bad sprain. Told them it was more than a sprain as I couldn't put any weight on it. After 6 months (!!!) of being told by my doctor and a few others that it was a sprain, I got ordered by my work to see another doctor and get it sorted. Straight away he suspected a torn ACL. Went to specialist, small operation to see what was wrong and when he came round to see me a couple of hours later his exact words were "Mr Ryder, your knee is totally kapuut." LOL! Joy!
Apparently the knee requires complete reconstruction and a lengthy spell off work which I can't do because I won't get paid.
I've just got used to it now. Ok, I can't do any running, can't ride a bike or anything like that anymore which is annoying but hey ho.
It does sometimes give way if you're walking on uneven ground or if you twist it but I just have to be careful!
Hope you get yours sorted mate!

As others have said, it may become painful and probably give way.
My ex did his PCL and the one at the side playing football (which ended his chances of a football career), and was ok for about 8years, then he started having trouble coming down stairs with it etc. Apparently the ligament had been 'fraying' from where it had been damaged. Anyway, after various scans, an operation, fixed knee brace and physio, it was alright.
ACL injuries are a lot more commonand easier to treat though.

have now found out my acl is not damaged but my pcl is and my lateral meniscus cartilage is and possibly my medial collateral ligament so that will be one buggered knee.
docs still don't know whether it will affect my job yet as it involves heavy lifting and climbing over lorries lol.
but I'm sure it will take ages to fix.......... great

Ligaments and tendons can take upto 2 year to repair, it all depends on usage throughout the recovery period.....obviously any normal person can't really stay of it and give it full recovery its just not possible, normal day to day living will push full (or as close to) recovery further toward that 2 year mark.
Cartilage.....well thats never gonna repair, if its bad that will most certainly require surgery unfortunatly.
Depending on how bad the injury is currently the only thing you can do yourself once your rest/recovery period is over is to stregthen muscle in order to support the knee as best as possible. Again with a dodgy knee some excercises are going to be difficult or impossible to do. You might wanna seek some physio advice....you should get it through the nhs easy enough even though you might be waiting for a bit, otherwise prepare to get a good reeming as physio aint cheap.
Good luck dude.
