Default anyone recomand a simple free anti-virus ?

I'm after a good free antivirus that hasn't got any firewalls / pop-up blockers and all the other crap

just want a simple AV that does an update and scan once a day !

Ive tried avast and avg and had problems with them blocking my net connection

try reading the post, avg and avast (the only ones mentioned by others in this thread) he doesn't want.

You would be better off just disabling the firewall part of the A/V if you had problems with it, which I assume you can do with the free ones?

Best anti virus piece of software is Mozzilla Firefox.
Dont EVER use internet explorer as it downloads website cache's without prompting you.
Never used anti virus software(mainly because they rape cpu speeds), never had a virus in the 7 years ive been using and upgrading this rig.

Why people persist on using the crap that is AVG and Avast is beyond me, there detection rate is nothing short of shit

http://www.avira.com/en/pages/index.php is probably the best free anti virus software

All browsers store web pages in a cache You dont have an option there and can clear out your cache every time you close Firefox if you wish but all that does is slow down the opening and browsing of web pages you frequent a lot.

Alot of websites have compilied caches of bullshit and executables that are required to run parts of the website, 90% of which are spy/adware, firefox will prompt you about this, internet explorer will not it will just download them in the background.

i personally use AVG Free and it doesnt touch your net connection so youre obviously doing soething wrong.

i have heard good things about avast but never tried it.

for corporate environments i rate mcafee over the others mainly based on it's enterprise framework

Chopshop, best not to speak on a subject if you don't understand it

Jim, have you actually used and compared the other solutions out there then, or is really just that the company you work for happens to use McAfee, and therefore you think it is best?!

Right its simple.

Dont open emails from people you dont know, especially those with attachments.
Dont click on popups.
Dont use website's that are screened by friefox as hazardous.

Well I have no uneccasry or unknown executables runing in cmd.
I have no errors with any software or internet apps. Everypasrt of my drive space and processing power is accounted for by the programs running on my computer.

Also, scanning for viruses can be done once in a while, but why pay for something that can be avoided with common sense.

I look at anti virus software as virus's. It takes up cpu power, it slows everything down, it interupts most processes with pop ups lol just like a virus does.

Jim,

Have you tried F-Secure?

I completely agree with you on Sophos (horrible enterprise console) but would certainly not say McAfee is the best!

Anyway back on subject; Chopshop shut up, you are wrong

Also the fact that was a "rather obvious" statement is more to my point that you dont have to pay a company to avoid viruses. Its common sense.

I agree, but 90% of computer 'users' lack that knowledge, and even with all the care in the world a virus can still be picked up.
Having A/V is much easier than not, for any average user.

I work with computers for BT and we allways install "BT Netprotect" but i would reccoment Avast for your antivirus and run "malware bytes" or "Ccleaner" every week.

Chopshop85

Your a heed the ball

If you think you can proactively manually detect virus/adware/malware yourself without anti v then that statement in itself would lead me to cast aside any input/advise you would have to offer it's just not practical for so many reasons!!

Ive worked in IT for over 10 years (Not building home networks at 14) and not 1 person I have dealt with doesn't run AV.

You come across like a typical anti IE user spouting off about how it's the route of all evil and it bores me to tears

Away and fire a 5p piece on your nose and stand with it against the wall and dont let it drop until you've come to your sense's

Fux Sake.

When I was using the freebies, which to be honest did a good job, I used AVG and
ad-aware, but then found superantispyware a LOT better, I had no net issues with the above, but DID have issues uninstalling the complete avg anti virus thing, had to upload latest version and remove it before running to get rid of all the older version.
I now use a paid for one, Kaspersky, and haven't looked back since, well worth the peace of mind, and ace backup, every computer is set to(unless disabled) report any bug/problem and the bods set to right away for a solution, over 100 updates pieces of info some days.
FREE things are free for a reason, just like Kasper is expensive for a reason.

Its quite obvious when your running a system that has some sort of virus on it. Thats kind of the point of a virus.

I guess one day if I do manage to get a virus and it does some noticable damage to my system in some way shape or form, I may be inclined to believe that the internet is a big scary virus riddled nightmare. 000ooo0000 lol

IMO Avast! is probably the best anti virus ive ever had. Its compact, reliable and never slows your computer down. How is it blocking your internet connection?
