Default Symptoms of knackered thermostat?

Hi all

On my st170, the coolant temperature stays at bang on half on the gauge unless I am coasting down a long downhill and the temperature starts to drop off on the gauge. It always used to stay bang on half way whatever the weather.

The oil temp also never gets to the temperature it should on the gauge unless hammering it and then the needle rises to half way on the gauge, when driving normally the gauge drops to just off cold.

Sounds to me like thermostat not closing properly?

Does it take a long time to warm up and use more fuel? Sounds like it might be stuck open. Just change it anyway to be on the safe side. (just make sure the new one works properly before fitting it.)

I think mine is knackered on my granada, it only blows out luke warm air when the heater is on hot and is running just above the bottom off the temp gauge instead of about half way, thats how i know mate

Thanks for the replies, it doesn't seem to take any longer to get hot. Fuel consuption seems to be as crap as it always has been (300 miles to a £50 tank worth).

Think I will just change the stat anyway as its only a few quid to do, shame the stat housing on an st170 is a bugger to get to!

90% of the time thats just tootling about

Hence the reason it now spends the most of its life in the garage and the other half's fiesta gets used most of the time!

Yeah I guess, but when the other half fiesta does 100 miles more to £10 less of fuel, it certainly saves a few quid!

Or it could mean your matrix needs flushing?
