I've heard of these sort of things happening... usually they will come back a few days later and nick it overnight.

As long as you've made it impossible for them to nick it, you should be fine.

just some bike locks through the wheels to the suspension so the wheels cant rotate very far!?

maybe put it in reverse so they cant pull it forward!?

as said, if they wanted it, they would have just come and got it, maybe they knocked the door to see if anyone was in.

Does it look like it aint moved in a while? if so, they most likely though you may have just wanted rid and would have made a few quid off it.

View it like this, IF they really want it, they will have it, but if you make it a pain to get, then they will be less likely to want the hassle if they are just chancers.

Out of interest - why would putting it in reverse make any difference to putting it in first? An engine, when off, just rotates against compression (that is what makes it hard to push when in gear) - with the valves all closed, going the designed direction of rotation will have no greater resistance than going the opposite way (ie during the compression stroke, piston moving up against closed valves.) as the engine will draw enough air in from the exhaust or inlet port when rotating slowly and no ignition on.

Exactly reverse gear won't do a thing, easy to overcome engine resistance.
You should have asked for a card or thier phone number as you "knew a mate scrapping some cars", they would then freely give thier number if not dodgy, then chat a few mins saying about thier transporter, that you r mate has one of the same year, if pikey they will note that you have seen the reg, even though probably false.
