Default mapping/ecu guru's

seeing as i know sweet fa about mapping etc etc i thought i,d ask you chaps on here .

was jetski'ng last night and a fella reckoned that nobody can remap/chip (or whatever it is you do to them) a jetski engine management sytem other than the manufacturer .
I cant understand why that would be. The type of ski we are talking about are 1400 or 1500cc 4 stroke fuel injected and supercharged . I would have thought that an engine like that would have a similar kind of set up to most cars ?? .
We only got onto this topic as it seems most of the guys want more power for there toy so spend loads on bolt on's and engine upgrades but they cant find anybody to help with the management side .

anybody shed some light ?

It would depend who the engine manegement is made by...

Most people won't be able to remap as there won't be any diagnostic conectors...

from what i can see , the manufacturers use thier own ecu's - seadoo=rotax / yamaha=yamaha . aparently they both have in built diagnostics and can be plugged in at a mainstealers .
Would you need to plug in to diagnostics to make changes to the mapping ? or is it a direct connection to the ecu ?
forgive my ignorance as i really have no grasp on the concept of engine management.

Remapping the ECU would depend upon someone having taken the time to 'crack' it.

I guess with serious Jetskis, just like Cars, Motorbikes, Snowmobiles or whatever, people must be retro-fitting aftermarket management?

Certainly possible as with any management, but a case of wether the amount of time taken to tool up for doing it would be worth the gains.
Especially given the fact they are probably mapped fairly well anyway, most N/A cars these days are barely worth remapping unless you change the spec of them quite a lot.

there are a few aftermarket management sytems available that will allow the user to plug in and make adjustments to fueling etc etc , most seem to have 3 or 4 pre stored settings which shows the need for adjustment (ie flat water racing would allow more top end where as you need bottom end grunt for choppy water etc etc)
the biggest problems with these are :-
1- cost
2- most only seem available from the states
3- people like me own and race the ski's so wouldnt have the first idea on what to do with the software.

standard jetski ecu settings are set to way below max performance as they have to pass stringent tests , i guess like car manufacturers do . So an off the shelf chip would be a real money spinner .

you musnt forget these are only toys but they cost in excess of 14k so the idea of spending 4 or 500 quid on making it quicker is considered money well spent

for example , a factory pipe (exhaust) for my stand up ski was over 700quid , theres over 2.5k in parts under the hood of my 750cc 2 stroke stand up and i only gained 8mph on the top end
