Smile Boost comes in

Hi all,

Just changed my turbine housing to a ar.48 from a .63. I was wondering what determines when boost starts to come in?
Is it solely the size of turbo - compressor/turbine sizing/housing ? or has the mapping/ecu etc play a part?
I no longer use the Amal valve and have a duel port actuator with a pressure adjuster feeding the back of actuator, I beleive this helps to run higer boost by applying pressure therefore stopping the wastegate opening?
It just seems to me that boost starts coming on a bit late, if the presure is not set correctly via presure regulator ajustment that keeps wastegate closed is it possible I am getting premature opening of wastegate causing boost to come in later than it normally would?

Thanks for any info-knowledge.

Tim.

The fact you have changed the exhaust housing, means you need a remap for a start!

There are a whole lot of factors that effect "spooling", i.e. compression, cams, mapping etc.

Also the turbo plays a big part, a lot of the new types are roller bearing or "twin scroll" affairs which will spool up quicker.

Thanks alot for replies, The guy who wrote my chip for me (Zodqi racing , Malta) has told me it does not need remapping as map sensor-air temp sensor tell the ecu what is needed re fueling etc...

Thanks for your help-opinion's/all input.

.
i'd seek a second opinion on that, i would think a major change like exhaust housing would require a tweak to the map,

I have a dyno readout when the car was set up on ar.63 turbine housing but how do I attach cos the exprienced might be able to tell me somthing from it?

The car was set-up with the following-

-Yb205 block
-standard cylinder head
-Standard cams
-Standard pistons/rods/valves/crank etc
-Isky double valve springs
-airtec rad/intercooler/pro alloy turbo cooler (effectivly extra rad as turbo not water cooled)
-standard 3 door ecu
-Uprated loom/fan/fuel pump wiring (MSD)
-Grey injectors
-044 fuel pump
-071 spark plugs
-4x4 exhaust manifold
-Magnex three box exhaust system
-Turbonetics T3/4E stage 2 50 trim .63ar

Compressor housing-inlet 3inch/ outlet 2inch
Turbine wheel- F154/ Minor 2.126 inch/ Major 2.555 inch
Compressor wheel- Minor 2.122inch/ Major 3 inch.

I also have turbo map and again don't know how to attach?

Let me know how to attach dyno readout I sure it will tell?

Cheers everyone, spent three years restoring this car love it and what it right.

I don't think it will need a remap, i'm sure the 380 chip from MSD i have for a T34 can be use dwith either .48, .55 or .63 rear housing.

Isn't it the compressor size that dictates the flow at what ever the boost pressure is.

Having a smaller or bigger exhaust housing just means that the bost will be earlier or later, held for longer etc. A long as the map has the boost range mapped for the rev range combinations then all should be OK.
Thats my understanding anyway.

Our T34 maps are very different between exhaust housing sizes, the compressor maps are quite different.

In fact we were getting slagged off on another ford forum just last week as one of our T34.63 maps on L8 wouldn't work and was very rich at high rpm and as always it had to be the map at fault.

I got the car in and It was a T34.48. Surprise!

the T34 maps of all variants are very different. One won't work on the wrong exhaust housing as they make boost in totally different areas of the maps

Hi James ,you guys map cars based on spec, I have no help in Malta to determine weather it works or indeed is any good?
Can you please tell me what you and those at MSD think ? The man who wrote my chip has been doing so for 27 years a very respected cosworth yb tuner in Malta but my knowledge is limited !!!! your thoughts???

My Best, Tim.

Why is it so slow to reach peak power? A good T34.48 map like matts one above that we live mapped will make big boost at 3k rpm,

Yours is very very lazy more like a T4 power graph without the numbers

The fuelling looks ok, but something is not right with that at all unless its been set up and mapped to be like that but I fail to see why you would do that

I'm not sure on that turbo spec if its actually a T34 as we know it. There's no way they make peak power at over 6k rpm

The rest of the. Engine spec looks sensible and pretty normal, we run them at 32psi tailing as rpm climb but they make peak power by 3.5 k rpm, I'd use a -31 actuator with 4 mm of preload.

You need the turbo map, sorry James bear with me , can't remember how I attached the last and you are right some pigs are more equal than other's (T34 are by no means the same)

I don't think we could do a chip off the shelf for it, it would be a live mapper with that blower on it.

My advise is, if that turbo makes power like that, take it off and get a proper T34

sorry to jump in what actuator would i need -31 or -34 ?
using msd off the shelf chip 380 bhp
t34 .63
bd14/bd8
siemens55s
double valve springs
valve cut outs
group a air filter
4x4 exhaust manifold
3" exhaust
rs 500 intercooler
turbo cooler
motorsport leads
uprated con rods

also do you sell a pre set fuel regulator for that bhp?
thanks

The usual T34 will work fine they don't really need playing with, up to you which variant you use but the .48 is the most punchy but runs out of puff at high rpm, where as the .63 is a little more lethargic but has more top end.

Ask cr turbos or turbo technics for some help I'm sure they will be glad to do so.
