Default Name some good overall engines

Ok name me some good, readily available engines for about £500-£700

I was thinking of a Vauxhall V6 3litre, but what else is there?

Thats the thing, not sure. Dont want to do a project and have no good engines from the manufacturers stable, would rather build a car round a good motor

That said, any engine will fit any car

Would you keep said engine standard or are you looking for big power? Would've thought if you're after big power options become (without checking prices):

Toyota 1/2JZ
Ford Windsor
Nissan VQ35DE / VQ36HR (350Z engines)
E36/46 M3
Jaguar AJ30 (on which the ST220 engine is based, or vice versa depending on which web page you read!)
VAG 1.8T

Kit Car Magazine did a 4 page article with the idea of 'celebrating' it and still didn't manage to make it sound like a decent engine! About the only thing going for it is being light.

SR20DET as in Gtir engine. 220bhp standard, 300bhp a piece of piss and also 400+ capable without touching the insides if it's mapped correctly.

It also give you the option of 4wd or fwd depending what box you bolt on.

1jze would be top choice, only negatives would be maybe at hard find at 500pounds and possibly its size

That the tt version? Size isnt a huge issue though, 6cyl, V8 etc

Yeah thought that too, fucking ace engine, might be a possibility. Would a porsche transaxle box fit it without enormous cost??

Doubt its cheap though.

The idea was: if say a BMW engine was the pick, then build a BMW engined something (M3 engined compact or whatever is cheap) etc. Could go one of 2 ways: keep original idea, or sling a ridiculous engine in something small ie 2JZ in an old school starlet.

This could get very expensive

I'm not sure if the Gtir engine will go rwd due to it being a transverse engine in the first place. It might be better to use the RWD S14 engine which is slightly different and probably nearly as good.
