Default Oil Temps

mainly aimed at cossies but any input happily recieved

What do you see at

1) normal running around
2) Motorway driving ( sensible speed )
3) stuck in traffic
4) giving it some stick

and what weight and brand of oil

normal running around 75c
motorway is approx the same
traffic depending on weather..80-90c
thrashing 90 -105c
im running oil cooler, and running grey's t4 2 bar of boost, if it helps mate

what would cause low oil temps ?


Like 60 on motorway, 65-70 normal driving, and never see above 85-90 and thats mainly in traffic.

thats with a T4 and greys running just under 2 bar

Low oil temps are caused by driving like Miss Daisy,stick it on track and drive hard for 15 mins should see 110C oil temps no bother.Regards,Micky

Even when not driving like a granny, when watching the temps and it never goes above about 85. and thats with driving like a complete fool.

What oil temp gauge have you got?Autometer one? Where is the sender? Normal oil capacity?

its a defi. not sure on sender placement, will see if i can find out tonight. Also, it has a big wing sump so probably holds around 7 litres.

where is the best place to have the sender ?

I suspected you might have double the normal oil capacity...hence me asking.
I would say a boss in the side of the sump is best but not sure of exactly where on a big wing people recommend. Still seems quite low for your temps

Interesting my xr4 used to run around 80/90 normally on a gentle run, went up to 130c all the time when thrashed, never dipped below 70 ever once warmed up.

mine takes ages to get to the temp mentiond above,
I normally wait til its been on 65 for a while, then start driving a little harder, when i see 70c+ i warm its arse a bit more. doesnt take long to get to 85 90c,
my sender is at bottom of sump via sump plug, running digital auto x gauge.

p.s i seen 105 when doing donuts the other day
