Default Tyre grip level question.

What's people opinions on the significance of increased grip going from a:

225 decent road tyre TO 205 R888

Also is anyone running 205/40 17 R888 all round on a cossie to good effect.

Thanks

Hi Dave

I can't really answer your question as I've never had 225s on mine but I can tell you that on mine there is a MASSIVE difference between Yokohama AVS 205s and 888s. They 'hum' a lot more than the Yokohamas as you'd expect but really hang on well.
I'd be interested to hear how you get on with 888 in 205/40x17s though as I'd like some for my Compomotive wheels rather than the T1-Rs I've got on there presently

Hope you get some more helpful answers

Toyo R888 track tyres only do suitable for 8x17 rim either 205/40 or 235/40.

The 235 are getting too big, diameter and cause all sorts of arch issues i believe. So your left with the 205

I have discussed with Toyo in the past about making a 215/40 but go nowhere.

I heard that due to the stiff sidewall and squarer profile of the Toyo R888, in 205 section its the same kind of width as a 225 road tyre eg Toyo T1-S, Eagle F1 etc

No not yet but when i do, the silly width of the 235/40/17 888 will become even more of an issue due to the wheels not leaning in at the top. So its down a size for me but unfortunately its also a 45 profile.

Rich
No way would i go for 45 profile on 17 rim, the overall diameter will be massive approx 635mm, in comparision to std wheel/tyre of about 590mm.

What i may do is search for suitable 8x16 wheel (if there is one) to fit over my 335 brakes and get 225/45 16 that would be spot on.

Ridgey,

Rainbird works out the sizes for me the other day and the figures he gave me werent as savage as yours one of you have got your sums wrong.

the only other option is the michelin pilot cup which are nearly Ł200 per tyre

Rich
The R888 spec sheet details

225/45 17 inflated diameter of 25" = 635mm
205/40 17 inflated diameter of 23.5" = 596.9mm
as comparision
205/50 15 inflated diameter of 23" = 584.2mm (Standard tyre size)

so your are talking 2" (50.8mm) larger diameter than std , and this data is from Toyo spec sheet.

225/45 16 inflated diameter of 23.8" = 604.5mm is maybe more suitable if 16" wheels can clear brakes. I've just spoken to Compomotive and got a brake spec sheet to fill in and send to them for confirmation if 8x16 MO will fit over my brakes.

Unless you want to mutilate your arches you really do need to consider diameter as well as width. I'm in exactly the same boat.

Pilot Cup's i believe are only in 18" and above. Smallest is 225/40 18.

Spoke to a guy today who told me that he used to run 16" wheels over 330mm APs so that is a possibility for you Rich. I'll let you know if i find any.

What difference does the larger diameter make then?

Yoko Parada is a nice tyre.

Edit: it also is a square (wide) tyre like the 888.

Larger diameter Tyres...
I'm no expert,....
but the car will ride slightly higher
tyre will reach further into the arch (incresing the likelyhood of rubbing on arch, liners, etc, particulary on fronts during steering i would have thought)
slower acceleration and higher top speed (although these maybe minor).

I have always aimed to be as close to std diameter to prevent issues, cos that makes sense to me, and i imagine alot of design went into gearing, suspension etc when that size was chosen originally.

TurboShed,

Does a nice tyre mean it looks good or it grips as i am only interested in grip?

Rich
I have just spoken to Compomotive and they believe a 8x16 MO will fit over my 335mm brakes. So my thoughts at the present time will be to get the following for track:

8x16 MO (Five spokes)
R888 225/45 16
