it to seize up straight away my mate went through a ford yesterday in his 306gti and it sucked some water in and cut out there appears to be no water in bores or oil but seems to seized solid as he can,t turn it over by hand could it seix=ze up instantly like that

sure theres no water in the bores mate as this could kill the engine dead, maybe youve bent a rod as the water was being compressed then let out out by the valve opening on the cam?

aa man told him the starter motor was wet and to dry it out with a hair dryer and it would start

yep it will, water does not compress so if its sucked some up then chances are you have bent atleast one rod.

take all the plugs out and see if there is any water in any of the bores, taking the head off will be better as it will show if a piston is lower than it should be and also if its full of water!

looks like a new engine time tho.

Engines can hydraulic if they suck in water, which means something has probably bent.

it depends on how much, but if the piston has filled, then its going to "hydraulic" and as mentioned abve, water doen not compress (much), so it could very well be new engine time!

remove the plugs, then try to turn over, if it still doesnt then remove the starter and try to turn it over remotely. also turn the engine over by hand, or atleast try, so that you cover most bases before spending money on anything.

i know people who buy flood damaged stuff out of usa copart and sometimes you can get lucky fannying around with them,i have known a few lads use coke or a damn good tow with summat big to unlock the donkey.

Does sound as though the engine has indeed become hydraulically locked. Take out the plugs and turn it over to try and remove the water, but dont look into the spark plug holes as you do!!

Remove the sump to have a clear look on the rods and crankshaft. A slightly bend rod will still allow the engine to rotate at some degree (maybe not a full turn) but a rod maybe is broken also. I have seen it on an opel astra, water endered the engine and one rod broke and stuck on the lower part of the block without penetrating it...

I think you mean hydro lock. Hydraulic lock would be caused by oil in the combustion chambers, not water.

It's all in the wikipedia article - it may make painful reading for your friend though...........

I worked on a 6 cylinder 2 stroke Supercharged Diesel Detroit 71 Series engine once in a grader in Methven New Zealand.

Farmer had left it sitting for a year or so in a field with nothing over the exhaust stack, centre 2 cylinders had filled with water. He tried to start it and nothing happened, so he got 2 brand new batteries, sill nothing. He then had the starter rebuilt and tried again. He sheared the flywheel bolts clean off of the crank.

We had to drill them out and do a full strip down of the engine, replace some liners and a few pistons and she started right back up.

So in short, water in engine is seriously bad. Take sump of as that's much easier than head on that engine.

Back in 1995 one of my company car drivers went through a ford (of the water variety) in his Cavalier 1.7 td - the car spluttered, had a cough and from that day on always had an uneven idle and smoked a fair bit at tickover. It did a further 40 odd thousand miles before the headgasket went. when the head was removed one piston was noticably lower in the bore than the others. Further investigation revealed a bent rod from ingesting water.

I was amazed that it went for as long as it did with a bent rod, also how it never locked up is beyond me??

In a mk6 escort 1600 zetec i had exactly this happened.
went through a ford and the engine stopped- took out the spark plugs to try and pump the water out as soon as possible but nothing would budge- whole bottom end was seized so i had to replace it

306 airboxes are at road level and/or the cold intake pipes are too, as it was on my GTi6 so its more than likely taken water in through there.

Yeah the air box in right at the bottom of the bay but the cold air feed is in the grill, Stupid idea to have a cone filter on a Gti6 if you ask me!

yeh, minute, and its mostly the air that is trapped within it, but its not really relevant to the thread.

as said above though, the intakes and the airbox are just behind the passenger side fog light so it has probably sucked it through there!

IIRC So are the Pug 406 ones too, I used to work at an accident repair centre and they were forever coming in with seized engines / bent rods

I was goin to put a gti6 inlet manifold on XSi and relocate the battery so i could have the K&N up top with a forsed cold air but i havent bothered yet lol

When you say he can't turn it over by hand, what is he actually doing? Trying to turn a pully with his hand? I'd be surprised if you could do that with the plugs in and 4 cylinders of compression to fight against. Take the plugs out and crank it over that should clear any water, but it could be fooked already it has much in there and it did hydraulic.

Didn't some renaults have this problem a few years ago? I'm sure I remember seeing it on watchdog or something.

no with a socket and bar and plugs are out still solid and yes it has a cone filter on hence the problem just got back from taking a look
