I would fit a plumbed in system, those hand helds are better than nothing but.... by the time you get out and and pop the bonnet the fire would have spread quite a lot,but with a plumbed in system a simple pull of the cable in car will put the fire out a lot quicker

Depends how big your bottle is i suppose? i did have a small electrical fire once but i only needed to use the kill switch for that,i had a 4ltr bottle in the back with 2 nozzles going to the engine bay, 1 in the boot for near fuel tank and one inside the car

Because of the different sources of material for a fire, plastic petrol oil alloy etc, a AFFF would be best imo.
The very best by a long way is BCF, but this is illegal except for mod uses, pity as it really was that good.

when we built the first 205 we had the same setup, minus the one in the boot as we ran standard tank, when we took it to be logbooked we were advised to remove the one from inside as the bloke reckoned if wearing a race suit there was no need and we would more likely end up scalding ourselves.

however, im guessing this isnt a full on racer where a fireproof suit will be worn at all times
so i would say this is one of the best deals around

I'm sure I was told NOT to open the bonnet as that lets in loads more oxygen - instead you squirt the fire extinguisher through the gap at the fire?

I'd go for a CO2 one - it also helps make up for the global warming you don't contribute to while the car is off the road!

I've got a Lifeline gas unit in mine and we've got one bolted to the mapping toolbox at work.

It's the same handhelds that a number of WRC cars use, they have outstanding capability in relation to ABC powder ones.

Not cheap at around Ł200 a shot but worth every penny!

I have seen quite a few fires in the sport

Even using up to 8 bottles on some and it still got nowhere near to putting it out.

As Gus says, use one to buy you time, dont expect it to be of any use on its own if the fire has caught hold.

As Tab's said the most effective thing got outlawed (but some of us do still carry them)

But anything is better than nothing.

didnt realise there were so many different options for putting a car fire out.thought you could only get the in car ones,i was gonna get the carbon fibre effect one,but now might have to look into a more substantial setup after reading this thread.
any tips for what to buy for a fully tuned up escort RST s2?

BROMOCHLORODIFLEUROMETHANE was the best, but not seen for sale for years, get one with a pressure gauge if stored pressure, or if not get a replaceable canister pressure one, not a disposable, but one that takes a pressure capsule, normally the same ones used in some drinks dispensers, and air guns.
If you do get powder just amke sure every 3 months or so to shake it about as powder compacts and can initially block.
Buy a decent refillable system/hand fire ex by a known make.
I favour AFFF as it deals perfectly with the triangle problem.

just looking and AFFF does not cover electrical, but ABC dry powder version covers petrol + electrical

AFFF does cover electrical when used at a distance as in our fire fighting training you were trained to use AFFF 9ltr extinguishers from over 2 metres.

Also in a car AFFF is fine in a car mounted system as everything is earthed to chassis and chances are you will have pulled the battery cut off so no actual electricity anyway.

Same with a handheld, remember to turn battery cut off and no problem.

Shame about BCF as it was awesome stuff!! We'd just moved over from "old" CO2 drench systems to BCF on all the ships when they banned the stuff and we had to go backwards to a technically inferior system!!!!

Are the modern in car systems zoned?? ie you can zap the engine bay without covering the fuel cell in the boot in foam for no reason?

Did a fire training course today at work funnily enough. Foam would be the one to go for without a doubt, but if the fuel catches fire unleaded petrol is very very difficult to put out. Powder makes an incredible mess and (according to the ex fireman training bloke) he'd only ever use foam on a car.

As Gus says plumbed system is the only way.

As you know i had 3 extinguishers, and garden hose and buckets for 15 mins before the fire engine turned up.

YOu may as well just buy a small one, which would sort a small electrical fire, but petrol/plastic and oil i dont reckon 10 extinguishers would be any good..............trust me i found out on sunday

I have foam and powder in my car

The reason I have two now is I stopped to help a motor bike that was on fire and used my powder one up in no time then later I was told a foam one would be better for a car, so I bought a foam one and just got my powder one refilled

The bike I stopped to try and help just went right up

And I got a fecking puncture mounting the curb too quick so that day cost me a fortune

As soon as the petrol catches you may just as well walk away!
