have you given the wall a light sand over and a whipe with a wet cloth?

I have just done white (real cheap shite), over orange (previous owners) in 2 coats, with no probs

Dont overload the roller.

Use plenty of strokes

Be patient

I much prefer a decent quality wool type roller like a wickes professional

Foam ones are shit

I fucking hate painting.

I've done the whole house in the last 6 months although most of it was onto new plaster so keying up wasn't an issue, just a watered down wash coat.

I read somewhere about loading the roller up then doing lots of big "M"s, then going over each one at a right angle and sort of colouring it in. Seemed to work for me and left all the coats nice and even. It even covered up the obligatory "CUNT" I wrote on one wall which pleased the missus.

it just gives the paint something to key to, so it goes onto the wall instead of being wiped of by the roller

when i painted my room i found when using a roller (wool one) it left little dimples in the paint and as noted before really patchy. i ended up doing another coat over it with a bursh, which came up fine.

should be able to do it in 2 coats no matter what colour your covering

my kitchen was bright orange, 1st coat of white on, ok showed the orange through but this was a base coat, left 24hrs to fully dry and then put 2nd coat on, job done

you have to let the paint dry before putting final coat on else you will be for ever trying to paint the bits that come through

I dont see how you can get bleed through after 4 or 5 coats ???? especially as the original wall is a lighter colour .
are you sure your not getting a reaction ? try adding some pva to the paint as it should help it to adhere and also stop any reaction bleed providing you give it a couple of hours to flash off 1st
