My father in law has been self employed as a P&D for about 25 years, seems to do very well and never has to advertise, always gets recomendations from other customers!

Most business will come from word of mouth that can take upto six months to get going.

Suppose you could look at targetting property developing firms, new build etc

A chap I know does ok and is always busy, not minted but does ok. He is going to be painting out the halway at our office, £220 and will take about a day tops.

Could get some flyers knocked up and post them through the door of houses for sale, or just sold etc, speak to rental agencies, see if you can do some work on the properties on their books.

My old man did this nearly all his life, landlords just wanted a quick spruce up after a tenant left, so the agency would call my old man in.

Could also look at a fitting carpet/laminate service , then buy the carpet in, mark it up and have the carpet shop fit it if you don't want to do it yourself. This way you can offer a complete service making you a more attractive option - kind of like a one stop shop.

Get a deal going with a carpet shop if you do this (smaller firms ideally) and get trade prices.
