Default Rover 214 problem

Forget about the car model

So anyway, if its using water alot(like needing it every other day) but theres no sign of leaks, would that point to head gasket?

Got to be going somewhere..
Difficult to start from cold, and a lot of steam for a while?
Smelt the exhaust for antifreeze? Probably just water though by sounds of it.

K-Series engines LOVE head gaskets. They are a practically a service item.

Water pump also means changing the timing belt-unless you have recently done it, you can more or less garauntee it will be the head gasket though. The "K" series engine is a piece of shite.Even with the upgraded gasket and all new bolts etc. You could easily spend £700 upwards and then be doing it all again next year. Get rid of it, save your money and buy something else! john.n

Think Rainbirds Freelander had munched its way through a handful of gaskets by that mileage.

well its her car not mine so all i can do is tell her, its up to her if she fixes it, or runs it until it goes pop and buys a new car.

Personally i think she should get another car, but its her choice

Thanks people

Lol at all the HGF suggestions!! If its simply using water then the first thing I would check is whether the inlet manifold gasket is leaking by either numbers 1 or 4 cylinders as this is a very common problem on plastic inlet manifold models, take out the spark plugs and compare the colours of the ends.

Yup, they can go as low as 15k! And unless the head is skimmed properly (or even replaced) can go again even with a 'better' HG! Shit cars, shit engines.

I did my dads ZR160 on 17k, 35k and 70k, as said, make sure you fit the landrover gasket with the sandwich plate on top of the gasket, skim & pressure test is vital, make sure its got metal dowls fitted (they came with plastic ones on the early type), pretty straightforeward job. Hour off, hour on.
