i would say either an astra, or a caddy. my old courier was a heap of shit which is very similar to an escort, mega impressed with my current LWB transporter, my mates into his vauxhalls and has always had astras, never had owt more than a water pump go wrong in about 5 yrs.

I love the 1.3 cdti Vauxhall Combo's, but they're probably still over your budget. Awesome little vans.

My mechanic had a vw caddy and sold it to buy a new ford connect, hates it, says the caddy drove better and had more grunt.

vw's are usually pretty good mile munchers.

Escow-Van

My only ride atm is an escort van. All I can say is, if its going to be your only car, don't expect to go fast They are reliable and have bulletproof engines.
I drive a Caddy quite a lot at work, its an 06 plate though so it'll be different to the ones your looking at I guess, but you will get more choice of engines, the top being a 104bhp, which shifts it nicely
Berlingo's are cheap.
Astra vans are an astra estate without windows, not much to say. Faster than an Escort though.

astravans are by far the best, go for a cdti cheap tax etc, drive like a car got a little bit of poke too, not too many common probs quite robust old things
